DICK GAUGHAN - LEGENDARY SCOTTISH MUSICIAN
Handful of Earth — "Folk album of the decade"
Summer's Great Music...
The reality that summer has ended is a concept that I care not to deal with, but, while I'm in a reflective state of mind I will try to capsulize some of the musical high points that may carry you through winter's cold and drizzle into the next festival season.
The music for new Celts is showing many positive signs, with new releases including "After the Ball," from Ireland's Arcady. Johnny "Ringo" McDonagh, formerly of DeDanann, heads this stellar group which includes the magical voice of Frances Black.
Their Edmonton performance converted many new fans to their traditional folk music, which includes a version of Stan Rogers "Field Behind the Plow."
From Kansas City come Connie Dover and Scartaglen with two, yes two, great recordings. Connie's solo outing, "Somebody," highlights her superb voice and is one of my favourites. Produced by former Silly Wizard-man, Phil Cunningham.
Scartaglen have "Last Night's Fun," just released, which demonstrates that great traditional

performance need not always come from Ireland. Their expertly played pipes, whistles, bouzouki and fiddle with Dover's voice show finely honed skills from this group, who were first recorded ten years ago by a Battlefield member, Brian MacNeil.
And now for something completely different....from out of Chicago comes the Celtic Funk sounds of The Drovers. This sextet fuses traditional jig and reels with a backbeat that could be
easily played in places with those sparkle balls in the centre of the dance floor.
The alternative campus radio should track down World of Monsters," on Tantrum Records. The kids will love it but your granny may twitch a bit. Cajun, Celtic, Prairie Blues is far from Bourne and MacLeod's "Moonlight Dancers." The guys have again maintained their integrity with an excellent follow-up to their self-titled album.
MacLeod's skill on the warpipes is still inventive and unequalled by any other instrumentalist. Watch for their fall tour. Also on the tour trail is the Oyster Band. If you don't have their latest release, "Deserter," you're missing a piece of musical history; this is a band that knows how the make their audience dance.
The legendary Scotsman Dick Gaughan was ecstatic over his trip to Canada, and he made many new fans from his shows. You can now get some of Dick's recordings including his "Handful of Earth," which Folk Roots Magazine says is the folk album of the decade. His more recent (Continued on facing page)
