THE CELTIC CONNECTION • OCTOBER 1992
MY FIRST EXPERIENCE AT A SEISIUN
MY
FIRST seisfun (Seh-shoon) in Vancouver. What a delightful surprise it was! Imagine a room filled with people of disparate ethnic origins, getting together to play little impromptu Irish music, to dance some reels (absolutely no experience required — just the ability to laugh at yourself) and to sing together.
It was like stepping back in time when relating to others taught us something about ourselves.
No tension, no pretense. I felt intrinsically what it meant to be Irish. I heard some people speaking Gaelic and I felt connected to my heritage. What a beautiful way to spend an evening!
They don't ask you to do anything. You can make a donation if you want — the proceeds go to the TB Vets to pay for the use of the hall. Kevin Dooley hosts the seisfuns on the last Friday of each month at Legion #44, 530 West Broadway. (Enter from the lane in back.)
Of course, the usual dark ale is served for those with an acquired taste. For the rest of us, there's "normal" beer, tea and coffee, sandwiches and chips.
If you're a musician looking to be heard, if you enjoy singing to the most avid and appreciative listeners, or if you have the nerve to recite a verse or two, venture out for the next seisfun.
If you're like me, and what you enjoy most is watching everybody else, there are great dimly-lit seats in the back of the room.
For more information, contact Kevin Dooley at (604) 873-9948.
