LEAVING FOR PALESTINE
Mr. Sam Rothstein
Mrs. Sam Rotlistein
Mr. and Mrs. Sam Rothstein, accompanied by their son, Morton, and daughter, Sophie Lila, left for Palestine via New York this week. There eldest son, Aser, will remain here to finish his education.
Mr. and Mrs. Rothstein have been residents of this city for the past twenty years and are well known to every Jewish resident. Mr. Rothstein has closely identified himself with the Zionist movement which he joined in his boyhood days in Russia. He was for many years President of the Vancouver Zionist Organization and Chairman of the Keren Heyesod Campaigns besides being an active, earnest worker for the National Fund. Through his influence and arduous labour the Young Judaeans were organized. Starting with six boys it can now count in its various branches 150 members, all of which reflect the greatest credit on the work of Mr. Rothstein. Seldom, if ever, absent from a meeting of any Zionist organization, he continually showed his faith in the movement in making Palestine a National Home. And not only did he work but he gave generously whenever called upon. No task was too great or no work too arduous and he was always willing to give his time and money for any communal cause.
He has been a member of the B'nai B'rith for 19 years and on the Executive Committee several times. He served as a member of the Community Chest for five years and was an active member of the Schara Tzedeck Synagogue.
Mrs. Rothstein has also done first class work here. She was one of the organizers of the Women's Pioneer Society, advisor to the Girl Judaeans and an active officer in the Rachel Goldbloom Chapter of Hadassah. It is the intention of the Rothstein family, if the climate is suitable, to make Palestine their permanent home. Mr. Rothstein, however, may return in about six months to dispose of his holdings in this city.
While wishing them, on behalf of the Community, "God Speed" and success in their new venture, we can assure them they will be sadly missed by Vancouver Jewish Community.
Mr. and Mrs. Rothstein were entertained, prior to their departure, by Mr. and Mrs. Max Charkow, K. Katznelson. :M. Shore and the combined Executives of the Zionist Organizations, Samuel llodge No. 668 B. B. and the Schara Tz€deck Congregation.
Tlie Young Judaeans Entertain
In honor of the departure of Mr. and Mrs. Rothstein the various branches of the Young Judaeans entertained them at a banquet at the Community Centre on Sunday, January 14th. It was an inspiring scene to witness about 150 young people seated around the tables eager to do honor to the departing guests. The dainty meal was provided by the young people and happiness reigned supreme. Mr. David Pouks presided and made an excellent chairman. Speeches were given, wishing the departing guests God speed by Rabbi Pastinsky, Mrs. Youngson, Rabbi Cass, Dr. Pox, B. Victor, D. Nemetz, Harry Preemian, the Presidents of the various branches and Mr. S. A. Goldston.
On behalf of the Young Judaeans a presentation of a movie picture camera was made to Mr. and Mrs. Rothstein. i
The guests suitably replied. Musical items were rendered by Miss Lucy Okulist. Gertrude Pouks. Miss Doris Rothstein and Lena Morris acted as accompanists. The evening concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.

In commemoration of the progressive Inspiration and as a token of the deep pride and respect he has evoked in the local organization. The Vancouver Young Judaeans gathered over a hundred strong in the Centre on Sunday last, to pay their parting tribute to their Honorary President, Mr. Sam Rothstein. Sorrow over his departure is only balanced by pleasure of knowing his destination, the homeland, Erez Yisroel. The guest of honor was the recipient of a beautiful moving picture camera.
This is the final notice of the Juda-ean masquerade to be held tomorrow evening at the Community Centre, Saturday, January 20th, at 8.00 o'clock. May we once again remind the members that each individual attending must wear a costume. This Is not a public affair and only members will be allowed admission.
Official notice has already been sent and answered. Accordingly on approximately February 21st three debaters, Leon Cook, Harold Rome, and Dave Fouks, representing Vancouver Young Judaea will engage in a verbal battle with a similar number of youths speaking on behalf of the Tuxis boy's group. This debate is of utmost importance for several reasons, primarily because it is the first time the Jewish Youth of Vancouver have entered into a contest of this sort between interdenominational groups, secondly, because of the reflecting issue of the topic, "Dictatorship versus Democracy" and thirdly, because of the reputed oratorical strength of the latter group. The Judaeans will uphold the affirmative of the question. A united support of Jewish youth and elders is requested on this venture.
Myer Freedman announces that he can handle a few more in the practices fop the'foptheoming'gym^ display, A greater percentage of attendance is necessary to accomplish this end.
In the past week a successful drive was launched by the Judaeans to collect all outstanding Yum Kippur pledges. The responsibility for this drive has been given over in full to the club by the Zionist Organization and to show our capability, all members are urged to complete their lists at the earliest opportunity.
