''Another Side of the German-Jewish Situation'^
''E have all been absorbed of late months in the consequence of Hitlerism for German Jews. But there is another aspect of the Hitler tragedy. What will be its effect upon the Jews of other lands, if the Nazi plot succeeds.in its diabolical purpose? It is impossible that the break up of German JcAvry should not produce wide spread reactions in world-Jewry. Like the Tsarist oppression, with the wholesale distribution of Jews that it forced, the Soviet triumph with its pagan creed andi the Great War itself, it is catastrophic in its nature. With every great change in human institutions, the Jewish destiny goes into the melting pot again, and it is hard to say in what form it will emerge, for the next political or social earthquake. With the downfall of German Jewry we are presented with a fresh violent disturbance of Jewish life, and its results are unforeseeable. Nevertheless, imagination reaches out into the future and the impulse to read its message is hard to resist. If the German Jewish Community is indieed doomed as a corporate body, how will the Jewries of other lands fare as a consequence?
«rould seem to show that the break with Germany, and the definite transfer of the Jewish hegemony to Britain and America would be no bad thing, and that Hitler-ism may have its eompensations after all. But that depends on one vital condition—that the Jews of these latter countries not only justify their leadership but material considerations, but show themselves worthy of the Jewish leadership by their devotion to Jewish culture and ideals. Short of that, the outlook would not be cheering, but dark indeed. Are the Jews of England and America conscious of this paramount necessity in the unchallenged privacy that may be coming to them? Are they preparing, in the way they should prepare, when they will steer the Jewish ship? On the answer may depend whether the vessel reaches the harbour at all, or reaches it battered and unseaworthy.
Letter to the Editor
To the Editor, Jewish Western Bulletin, City.
Re Mountain View Cemetery Dear Sir:
May I he permitted through the medium of your paper to draw the attention of owners of graves and plots in the Mountain View Cemetery to the advertisement we inserted in your paper last week advising them that the Schara Tzedeck Cemetery Board had made arrangements for the care of all graves in the cemetery during the coming year. Many relatives of those who have passed to the great beyond, have employed, and paid outside gardeners to attend to the graves of their departed loved Ones by planting shrubs and flowers during the summer season. Last year the Cemetery Board spent approximately $1500.-00 in renovating this cemetery which for many years had been an eyesore to those who visited It.
They have now re-engaged the services of an expert gardner who Is prepared to do this work and we appeal to those interested to get in touch with the Executive Secretary of the Schara Tzedeck Cemetery Board, 81 Pender W. and make the necessary arrangements for keeping the graves in condition. The charges will be the same as made by outside Arms.
Trusting this will receive the attention of all interested and thanking you for the insertion of this letter. Yours truly,
W. J. LEVIN, Chairman, Schara Tzedeck Cemetery Board
An Explanation
We have received several telephone messages and letters with reference to certain items printed in our last issue in our "Ladies Corner" protesting against certain recipes we printed from the "Councils Cookery Book" which were contrary to the Mosaic Dietary laws. We are extremely sorry that these appeared and we can assure our readers that it is far from the policy of this paper to print anything that is not strictly in accordance with the Jewish Kashruth laws. It was only through a mishap on the part of' the writer that same was inserted without being properly read. The Bulletin Committee have decided that in the future not to publish any items without proper scrutiny. We can positively promise our readers that any recipes published will be perfectly "Kosher", and may be used by the most orthodox in our midst.
In view of the fact that so many have complained about this, %ve olTe)> this explanation and apologj' whic'i we feel certain will be accepted by our readers.

Henry Morgenthau, Jr., Is Second Jewish Member Of Presidential Cabinet
The appointment of Henry Morgen-thau, Jr., as Secretary of the Treasury by President Boosevelt on Monday brings to the Cabinet for 'the second Mme in the history of the country a Jewish administrator. The tlrst was Oscar Solomon Straus, who served as Secretary of Commerce and Labor in ^he Cabinet of President Theodore
'losevelt iProm Dec. 17, 1906 until March 4, 1909.
Mr. Morgenthau was on Nov. 15 of this year elevated to the post of Acting Secretary of the Treasury following the indefinite leave of absence granted by President Roosevelt to William H. Woodln, who resigned as Secretary this Monday on account of illness. The new Secretary is a close personal associate of Mr. Roosevelt, having served as his campaign manager in 1928 when he was candidate for Governor and as Conservation Commissioner in New York State from 1931 to 1933.
Mr. Morgeuthau's father was President W^ilson's Ambassador to Turkey. The Secretary is married and has three children.
•One thought instantly rises in the mind. The Jewry of the Reich has been one of the most important founts of Jewish Culture. Its great scholars and teachers have given direction to Jewish thought and priceless additions to Jewish scholastic achievements. Its destruction mu.st, therefore, impoverisb us and make Jewish intellectual life a much poorer thing. German Jewish individruals may carry their traditions to other lands, and bring their brethren there mental enrichment. But we may well ask whether their culture, uprooted from the soil in which it flowered for many centuries would be quite the same thing when transplanted elsewhere and robbed of the old association and environment. There might be a loss of vitality and slackening of inspiration, though some measure of survival of both qualities, might fairly be expected.
Nor can we forget that from Germany has come the impulse of religious Radicalism. If its Jewry is broken up, that religious influence might be weakened, though whether the result would be a blessittg^or the reverse depends, of courae, on one's point of view in these matters. Those who stand to the right in the region of religious thought, might not altogether welcome the infiltration of German Jews reared) in the home of ultra reform and Liberal Judaism—just as some people are not altogether enamoured of the idea of a large influx of German Jews into Palestine, for fear of the assimilation habits they may carry in their baggage.
In more than one direction we hear questions as what kind of leaven some of the emigrant Jews of the Reich will bring into tbe Jewish Communities among whom they will make their home. But there is one aspect of the German-Jewish environment which must be of enthralling interest to our people. For ages past there has been a great Jewish Community in Germany, influencing the lives of the Jewries elsewhere and often sending its children with their capacity and enterprise, as agents of good among their coreligionists in other lands. At least some pages in modern Jewish history in England and the American Continent might have been written differently, if the Rothschilds and the Schiffs and many others had not gone forth to settle in other lands. If Gfcrman-Jewry is now to decay and disappear, and if the Reich were to be allowed to absorb Austria with corresponding results to the Jews, the age-long Jewish link with Central Europe would be snapped at last. The map of Jewry would be radically re-drawn andi Jewish life not ai little changed. Indeed, it would be hard to think of a world Jewry without its German element.
But the most important point in this connection in that the centre of gravity of Jewry must be more and more shifted to English-speaking lands. An interesting article in the **J|ewish Morning Journal" informs us that twenty-three percent of the Jewish people speak English, and are under the direct influence of English culture. Even if German-Jewry lives on—in attenuated numlei.s and robbed of spirit of learning—recent events in Germany, as the writer of the articles says, will precipitate the Jewish break with German influences. The fate of Jewish in Soviet Russia is an enigma. Nobody can see how it will shape under the disintegrating conditions in which it is living. And it is in the (as yet) still free Britain and America that large Jewish communities have the best chance of surviving in cohesion and exerting their power. The overthrow of German-Jewry makes Jewry as a whole more and more an Anglo-Saxon Jewry in influence, and it is from London and New York that the world of guidance will more and more go forth. Will this be a good or bad thing for the race? We believe it is all to the good that the Jewish destiny should be linked in increasing strength Vvith that of the Anglo-Saxon peoples, for it is in the free institutions of the Anglo-Saxon countries that the Jewish traditions and outlook can best be preserved, and we agree with the writer, already mentioned, that the Anglo-Saxon spirit is nearer than the Germanic to the Jewish spirit.
Germanism and Judaism are like Shakespeare's "Ci-abbed age and youth": they cannot live together, because they are wholly different and mutually antipathetic, whereas the Englishman and the Jew have much in common if only as the result of a common reverence for the Bible and its teaching. Moreover, while there is
much of Teutonic influence that the Jew would be healthier for . i,, rr,^- . . l ..... i

shaking off, there is much m the Englishman s character and out- y^u must take it. The only choice is, immediately directed to Rabbi Cass, look that he would be better for absorbing. All these considerations how?" or to the Community Centre oritce.
