First hand Isrcsel b<^rd
'Lou Zimmerttian,' executive director of the Jewish Community Council, received a. letter from his sister in Israel, Mrs. Fr^a Joisoh, formerly of Toronto and .Vancouver. Dated January 10, at Kiryat Shmone, the following excerpt from the letter gives a first hand account of conditions on the border: ^
"The situation on the border is grim, A day doesn't pass that an 'incidcAt' doesn't occur. / I don't suppose'these minor occurrences are given any space at all bapk heme—a couple of Israeli patrols shot at, a jeep blown up by a land mine, a bicyclist killed on a major highway (by infil-
account of
tratdrs), travellers oh the Beer-sheba Boad killed by marauders,
"Actually, no place in Israel is more than a few miles from an Arab border. Not very long ag\>, ever! the Lebanese (who are usually very quiet) threw a couple of grenades into some houses in a moshav near the Lebanese border, and fired on a jeep travelling on a border road which is usually safe. Biit we read about these provocations (sometimes
know some of the people 'hurt), take a grim satisfaction in our retaliatory raids on military objectives, and go on living quietly."
