"Eye View" By ADAM RABINER
ARAFAT-^ THE LIBERA TOR TURNED DICTA TOR
Palestinians are totally misguided if they believe that freedom and democracy will reign in "Palestine" following the future withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and Jericho.
Unfortunately, it is highly likely that Arab inhabitants of the future autonomous regions of the West Bank and Gaza will conclude that life was not so terrible when Israelis were in charge.
The Palestinians of the Administered Territories have placed all of their trust
actual size of the Jericho region and control over border crossings.
Arafat's other major breach of the deal is his inability and unwillingness to condemn and control PLO terrorism.
Several members of Arafat's own Fatah wing of the PLO have been involved in the murders of Jewish settlers, and Arafat made unconvincing condemnations of the slaughters only after substantial pressure by the U.S. government.
Adam Rabiner is a fourth-year political science student at UBC.
in PLO leader Yasser Arafat. They hope that he will be a worthy and fair leader.
It is clear, however, that although Arafat was an effective and successful leader of a terrorist (or some may say liberation) organization, he possesses few of the necessary qualities to properly lead the soon-to-be-created Palestinian "homeland".
It is impossible not to observe several significant flaws in Arafat's political skills. Likewise, one cannot ignore his egocentric disposition which will further hamper his ability to run the new "nation" in an objective manner.
Both Israelis and Palestinians involved in the negotiations since the September 1993 signing of the Oslo accord have squarely blamed Arafat, both for the near breakdown in the talks and for delay in implementation of the agreement.
Arafat has taken full control over all decision making and has left his negotiators, advisors and some 1.8 million Palestinians from Gaza and West Bank completely cut off from determining their own future.
The Palestinian negotiating team has been reduced to nothing more than a token of Palestinian involvement.
Everyone is aware that all deals must be OK'd by Arafat, so there is hardly a true representation of Palestinian interests.
"Arafat the Authoritarian" has also defied the September agreement on numerous occasions. He now talks of an independent Palestinian state where he will be the "president" even though the agreement that he signed will not allow for that to occur.
Arafat has also changed his demands on important issues that were already agreed upon, such as the
WINNIPEG — Former Melfort resident Norm Vickar was recently honored when the Saskatchewan government named one of its buildings after him.
Vickar is a former Member of the Legislative Assembly for the area, and Saskatchewan's only Jewish cabinet minister.
It is evident that hundreds of Jews will be killed if Arafat gains power in the West Bank and Gaza.
If he can't impede even loyal PLO members frpm engaging in terrorist activity, does anyone really expect that he will be able to prevent other groups, such as Hamas or the PFLP, from butchering Israelis or moderate Palestinians?
Many of Arafat's motives are often blatantly driven by his over-inflated ego. For example, the PLO leader has repeatedly stated that he wants to print up Palestinian currency — the only reason being that he wants his own portrait to be on the money (even though economists warn that a move to produce a separate Palestinian currency would be crippling to the Territories' economy.) .
His decision to name himself "president" of Palestine before any existence of a state, and prior to any sort of elections, further reveals

Arafat's selfish and non-democratic intentions. (He has also attempted to delay/ cancel plans for elections after Israel's withdrawal).
Arafat's refusal to work in the best interests of the Palestinians is shown once again by his constant calls for a completely independent Palestinian state.
Unlike most realists, Arafat does not recognize that the only way for Palestinian autonomy to succeed is in a federation with Jordan.
Arafat is also discredited as a legitimate and capable leader by the fact that many of his own peoples do not support him or his agreements with Israel. Many of the PLO's top officials have reesigned as of late to protest Arafat's authoritarian ways and poor judgment.
More importantly, there are also some 15 Palestinian-Arab terrorist organizations who oppose any sort of coexistence with Israel, and many of them have threatened to kill Arafat for being a traitor.
The majority of Palestinians are counting on Yasser Arafat to provide them with a just and responsible form of government. They also anticipate that their lives will drastically improve once he takes over.
Ironically, the one huge obstacle that may prevent Palestinians from achieving their goals is Yasser Arafat.
Palestinians will not accept yet another form of oppressive authority, even if Arafat is at the helm.
In fact, a Palestinian homeland dictated by Yasser Arafat will cause many Palestinians to look back favorably upon the "good ol' days" of Israeli occupation.
