Merchants haggle at Grand Bazaar
0
JAMES MONTAGNES
ISTANBUL, Turkey -So you think you have seen large shopping mall$!_ Wait until youcome to this largest of Turkish cities. For Jiere is the Grand • Bazaar, granddaddy of'all' modem covered shopping maills. For over 500 years, merchants have haggled here with tens of thousands of customers daily. It is a city-in itself, a labyrinth of 5,000 shops among almost 100 streets and dimly-lit alleys.
The bazaar has many entrances, outside some of which you can buy rose-flavored Turkish delight, the only place in Turkey where this .travel reporter found this well-known con-
fection. In this Grand Bazaar you can buy almost anything, everyday things as well as silks, brasswafe, suede clothing, tumed-up Turkish slippers, silver and gold filigree jewelry. Fart of the atmosphere in the bazaar is the haggling, without which no sale is complete.
Istanbul is by far the most visited of'^urjkishcitiejs.jts more than three mi|lion__ people create a hive oT activity in every sector. They swarm over the docks where ships from all over the world load and unload their cargoes- They walk, ride on doqjkeys, travel in buses, shared taxis called dolmus and in horse-drawn carts along the steep, curved, narow, cobble-.stoned streets lined with

Busch Gardens' newest adventure, the Tanganyika Tidal Wave, is now open for park guests who are willing to get a little wet whether they are on or off the ride. ' "
Named for the mainland region of Tanzania.oi^ the east coast of Africa, the Tanganyika Tidal ; Wave features, a water safari through a dense jungle cbmplete with .exotll; animal sounds aiid white rhinoceros and American • crocodile exhibits. The ride culminates .with a ; 16'/!-metre drop into a lake, creating a giant wave that drenches both riders and daring observers on an observation bridge.
The ride's free-floating boats hold up to 20 guests, taking them through a / water-filled cburise 390 ; metres in length. .
For a more calming exr__j. perience. visitors may exit the ride through Orchid Canyon -- a lush tropical nature walk located adjacent to the Tanganyika Tidal Wave. The pathway features waterfalls, an array of blooming^ orchids

solid blocks of old buildings.
It was among these solid blocks of buildings that I finally found one of the synagogues in the city. There is little to show that this is a house of worship, just an entrance in a4)iock-of old buildings. But inside was a barely furnished synagogue.
Istanbul is a city where you can be in Europe, crOss a bridge or ferry across the Bosphorus waterway and be in Asia. Most of Turkey is in Asia, but many of the major sites for tourists are in the European parts of the city. ■
For history buffs, the most-exciting trip is to join. the hordes crossing on foot
'or wheeled transport the famed old Galata Bridge or i^e modem Ataturk Bridge across the Golden Horn ^ waterway. Along this storied water stand princely • hornes and palaces built in
^ the days when the Ottoman Empire was at its greatest gloriy. iModern hilltop coff«e shops overlook the .scene.
Most splendid of the many mosques in Istanbul are the Sultan Ahmet or Blue Mosque, so called for its inner and outer tiled
walls, the mosque of Suli-. man the Magniifkent with ■ four graceful imiriarets,-and St. Sophia which was a basilica from the 6th to the 15th centuries when it became a mosque with the conquest of Constantino--ple, now ' known as Istanbul.
There are dozens Of former palaces and museums to visit^but be sure to see the Topkapi with its formal gardens, numerous coloriFuIly tiled rooms, its harem quarters and its beautifully ornamental baths. ShO\yn in the museum section are the finest pieces of decorated jewelry, weapons and westem. porcelain.
Othfr museums in the city range frofh archeology to mosaics, from Turkish military uniforms and naval history to one devoted to 20th century statesman Kemal Ataturk, who was the first president of the present republic.
There are reminders of the days when the Roman Empire extended here, with monuments and a Museum of Antiquities. This museum aliso has tombs of Alexander the Great as well as paintings and sculptures of Roman personages.
