A Triumphant Search for Family Roots
TOGETHER IN EXILE By Peter Murphy Privately published Lingley Printing Company Saint John, New Brunswick ISBN 0-9694152-0-6 Hardcover, 322 pages, maps, photos; $25
Review by Marianna O'Gallagher
Peter Murphy, the author of this lovingly prepared catalogue and chronology of hundreds of families from Saint John, New Brunswick, is the kind of historian who beats a path to every door and to sources that have no doors. He sought out relatives and tombstones, attics and albums, archivists and old newspapers, street corners and their neighbourhood boundaries and cities and their records.
In his curiosity about his own
family, Murphy discovered that some districts in the city of Saint John had been settled and populated by immigrants from County Louth in Ireland. After setting up a base of 1,400 names, he was able to trace their immigration to Canada, especially that of their settlement in specific parts of the city of Saint John, which in general have remained home for many generations. He paints an intriguing picture of close neighbour and clan connections.
"Only through extensive genealogical research could an accurate picture be reconstructed. Having caught a glimpse I was determined to see the whole. And this is it," says Murphy at the end of his foreword.
The straight genealogical information is presented steadily and uniformly throughout the book. It is well footnoted and there
are many maps of both Ireland and New Brunswick, it also includes many attractive family pictures and individual portraits.
More than 500 family names ap-
f>ear in the index, some in page-ong multiples with such name as Kelly, Murphy, Quinn and Walsh. Several Acadian names are there also.
The author has included as much anecdotal and other information (such as nicknames) as was available, and this is threaded throughout.
Interesting, even for a moderately curious reader, but it is a challenge to amateur genealogists "to go forth and do likewise," to emulate the efforts of writers like Peter Murphy.

HOMESICK DONKEY ON THE RUN
CO. ANTRIM, Northern Ireland — A champion racing donkey was stolen from a field near Ballymoney almost two weeks ago. His owner, Jack McKillen, has since receive a phone call demanding a ransom of Stg£500 for return of Toby, the winner of the All-Ireland Donkey Derby, two years ago.
While this is not a front-page story every day, it has been receiving considerable coverage in the Irish media. A detailed reading of the case shows that Toby is a native of Donegal. Nobody seems to have considered the possibility that the poor animal just got homesick and left his new home in Antrim voluntarily. — Liam Ferrie
