Sasquatch Daze Includes a Harp Competition
By MARGARET McRAE
HARRISON HOT SPRINGS, B.C. — Who has not at times dreamed or thought about that which is not perceived? What of the Sasquatch, the Yeti, the "Little People" of Ireland, the "tylwyth teg" of the Welsh, all or whom appear in mist-shrouded tales passed down through countless generations.
For eleven days in May, British Columbian heritage will be celebrated during Sasquatch Daze. This year, Mary Murphy, an Irish harpist who lives in Harrison Hot Springs, has inspired organizer Stephen Harvey to include in the festivities a harp competition to be known as "Harper's Bazaar."
There will be three categories for the amateur harpist: those who have had 18 months or less of study, those with 18 months to five years of study, and those who have more than five years.
Stephen Harvey is full of ideas for this year's festival, so, along with the Harpers' Bazaar, he has planned to have sand sculptures on the beach, an outdoor art exhibition, a parade with a competition for amateur bands, hiking along trails Sasquatch may have travelled, and historic display, storytelling and myths of many lands and much more.
•
SASQUATCH DAZE will take place between May 21 and 31. If you are interested in participating in the harp competition or require further information, please contact Stephen Harvey at(604) 796-9354.
