SFU Pipers Three-Time World Champions
The world-renowned Simon Fraser Pipe Band is once again a world champion beating out 216 contenders at the World Pipe Band Championships, held on August 14 in Glasgow. The band is third-time world champion, having claimed the title in both 1995 and 1996.
In recognition for their dedication to piping and the numerous international awards their dedication has reaped, two founding members of the band were honoured by Canadian Governor General Romeo LeBlanc. Brothers Jack and Terry Lee received Meritorious Service Medals at a ceremony held in Quebec City.

THE ROAD LESS TRAVELLED
AN INNOCENT IN SCOTLAND: More Curious Rambles And Singular Encounters By David W. McFadden McClelland & Stewart, 1999 ISBN 0-7710-5528-5_
David McFadden first established himself as a gifted chronicler of journeys and places with his Walk Around the Great Lakes series, first published 15 years ago.
And, his off-beat poet's perspective went on to serve him well in An Innocent in Ireland, where he revealed an Ireland beyond green fields and damp woolens.
An Innocent in Scotland is a rich, colourful, highly personal account of this author's wanderings in one of the world's most fascinating places.
The usual Scottish tourist sites are passed-by in favour of an erratic course that leads McFadden to lesser-known and sometimes quirky locales.
He is open to whatever experience or character may be around the corner, whether it be exploring an old Dumfries tavern once patronized by Robbie Burns or tramping
across a meadow through a sea of wild flowers on Iona.
Everywhere he goes, from delving into the massive, preserved chamber of tombs at the Grey Cairns of Canister, or chatting with the hollering newsagent on Argyll Street in Glasgow, McFadden offers his extremely personal impressions which are wry, amusing and often more astute than he lets on.
He wisely allows the many characters he meets to speak for themselves — ample space is given to the various barmen, shopkeepers, hoteliers, and passers-by along the way.
Their conversations, ranging from the instructive or humorous, to the surreal, give a thoroughly entertaining view of a Scotland the guidebooks never reveal.
An Innocent in Scotland is a funny, unsentimental and captivating look at this varied and complex culture.
David McFadden makes an ideal companion for travellers who wish to put aside the average travel guide and follow a route that is most definitely off the beaten path.
Euro Blamed for Spiralling House Prices
LONDON — British Shadow Chancellor Francis Maude cited runaway house prices in the Irish Republic as an argument against Britain's entry into the European Union single currency set-up.
He claimed the unchecked trend of spiralling housing costs in Ireland was "a very clear illustration of the price of adopting a oue-size-fits-all interest rate."
Maude said that since joining the single currency at the start of this year, the Irish Central Bank had lost the ability to set rates in the interests of Ireland. Maude's comment was sparked by figures showing that house prices in Dublin will shoot up by 25 percent this year in spite of policies aimed at slowing down the rate of increase.
The statistics prompted fresh fears of an adverse effect on Ire-land's Celtic Tiger booming economy, in particular on the rate of inflation. Brian Hayes of Fine Gael called for Taoiseach Bertie Ahem to get personally involved in a bid to control property prices in an attempt to head off a potential shortage of new homes for first-time buyers.
