CHRONICLES OF THE CELTS By lain Zaczek Sterling Publishing Co. ISBN 0-8069-9948-9
UTHOR Iain Zaczek writes "The word 'Celtic' conjures up many things. To some people, it evokes a hypnotic design from the Book of Kells or the Tara brooch; to others, it is a plaintive song, accompanied by a line fiddler or piper; or again, it is a mystical past, peopled with Arthurian knights and druids. All these notions have some basis in reality, but most are half-truth, seen through a veil of romanticism. These, in turn, have been woven into the fabric of the Celtic tradition, which has captured the imagination of successive generations."
Now, in his most recent book Chronicles of the Celts, Zaczek unravel the myths and legends about these people, who were a loosely-knit group of tribes whose settlements once stretched from Turkey and the Balkans right across to Western Europe. However, nowhere was the culture of the Celts so richly developed as in Ireland, Wales and Brittany.
In this beautifully designed book, Zaczek offers some of the most compelling sagas of the Celts which he has arranged according to these three nations. In the Irish section, he offers five classic tales including the story of Cu Chulainn and the story of Ailill and Queen Mebd and their argument over bulls which led to war.
Throughout the book are over 120 magnificent

photographs of sacred sites, manuscripts and artifacts which capture the rich and detailed culture of these people. Also featured are short explanations relating to Celtic beliefs and symbolisms.
Readers will also learn how these sagas inspired the later Atlantis myths, Arthurian legends, the romance of Tristan and Iseult, the Merlin cycle and the quest for the Holy grail.
STAGE EIREANN ELECTS NEW BOARD
By LIAM O'MAJXEY ANCOUVER — Stage Eireann, the local Irish drama group, held its annual general meeting and elections over the summer, but true to form for this sometimes beleaguered group over the past few years, the proceedings were a little out of the ordinary.
Mm
When the meeting was first convened with the usual sparse attendance on June 29, incumbent President Bill Forbes announced he didn't intend to continue in that or any administrative position, although he would be still be available to assist the new executive if desired, and to take part in theatrical activities as director or otherwise.
After his and other officers' reports, it turned out that no one present was prepared to stand for office either, so that the meeting had to be adjourned until August 18.
Meantime, an informal open meeting of members and supporters was held on July 28 at the suggestion of immediate Past President Pat Warren, to discuss the future of the group generally.
This was better attended and the group received another shot in the arm in the form of news that its application for provincial government assistance, from the portion of gaming proceeds set aside for non-profit community purposes, had been accepted.
When the annual meeting reconvened, the elections were finally held, with the follownig results:

New officers Patrick McMullen and Mary Ann Mutter played prominent roles in the group's award-winning production Happy Birthday, Dear Alice last season, in which long-serving treasurer Brenda Warren took the title role of Alice.
Also re-elected was secretary Susan Hennessy, who directed its spring 1996 Theatre B.C. Festival entry, The Poker Session by Hugh Leonard.
Incoming Vice-President Marilyn
Mulldoon appeared with the group on stage in its fall 1996 production of Hugh Leonard's Summer, and in last November's public reading of The Cripple of Inishmaan at the Irish Heather Bistro.
Meantime, the former executive had carried on regardless with preparations for this fall's play, which has been announced as the 1995 Abbey Theatre hit comedy A Little Like Paradise by Niall Williams.
The Dublin-born author has become increasingly well-known in recent years, not only for his plays for also for a series of books detailing his adopted life as a small farmer in West Clare, in the previously abandoned old family home of his Irish-American artist wife Christine Breen, and even more so for his novels Four Letters of Love and As It Was in the Beginning.
Stage Eireann's production of A Little Like Paradise is planned for November 23 through 25 in the ultra-modern Studio Theatre adjacent to its old venue in the James Cowan Theatre at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, Deer Lake Park, Burnaby.
A members' casting audition will be held in the West End Community Centre at 870 Denman Street, Vancouver at 1 PM on September 11 and a general audition open to all at the same time on September 12.
Further information is available from Bill Forbes, who hopes to repeat last year's success with Alice, at (604) 688-8756.
