Edmonton Tournament A Great Success
By KAREN HANSEN
EDMONTON — The second annual Wolfe Tones Invitational Gaelic Football Tournament was held on July 10 and 11 in Edmonton.
The tournament was attended by a men's team and a women's team from both Vancouver and Calgary and two men and women's teams from Edmonton.
The weather was hot and the games were entertaining. This year's tournament was held at the Leprechaun-Tiger rugby club who graciously opened their doors to the tournament. This added bonus was much appreciated by everyone.
After Saturday's games, the final matches were already decided with a game remaining for each team.
In men's play, both Vancouver and Edmonton "A" teams won two games. In women's play, Vancouver won two games and Edmonton "A" won one game.
The evening's festivities were of the usual Edmonton Irish club-style: a fantastic roast beef dinner and live music all evening long which were enormously appreciated by all teams.
Sunday was a very relaxed day with schedule changes and a late start. The men's Edmonton "B" team played a great game against Calgary, leaving them winless in this tournament.
The women's Edmonton "B" team lost a very hard and well-played game against Vancouver and won a game against Calgary, who with low numbers, played very well.
With schedule changes and a large number of children attending, an entertaining kid's game was played. Dillon from Calgary, the youngest participant, played a great game, scoring a number of goals and dancing around his opponents on the field.
It was great to see the kids enjoy themselves so much. As my nephew Shane put it, "I love this game."
The seven-a-side tournament was a great success for Edmonton with both teams winning their respective trophies. It was the first win of the season for the women's team and a first win in a long time for the men's.
Many say that teams play better with new jerseys and this may be the case. The Irish Club in Edmonton and Guinness very graciously sponsored the team who extend a sincere thank you.
There has been talk of more tournaments this season, nothing in stone as yet. I have to say that this unofficially marks the end of a very short season of football.
And, in closing, to all players, teammates and opponents: I wish you all the best. Take care and God bless!
