Well-Earned Award for Irish Woman of the Year
By MAURA McCAY VANCOUVER - The recipient of this year's Woman of the Year Award, presented by the Irish Women's Network on April 5, is a woman who has earned the respect of her peers and community through selfless dedication and hard work.
Marie Morris is one of the most visible and foremost members of the local Irish community. She was a founding member of the original Irish dramatic society, The Emerald Players. She also served as president of its later incarnation as Stage Eireann for almost eight years. During her tenure, Marie worked tirelessly for the organization. She was instrumental in establishing the annual St. Patrick's Day fundraising event at the Heritage Hall, which is so well-remembered and appreciated by those who attended.
Marie is a woman who speaks her mind honestly and who can be counted on to pitch in and help wherever required. Her enthusiasm and ready-Dublin wit has been an asset to many an organization. Since her arrival in Canada in 1957, she has also known her share of trials and has survived with an admirable courage and spirit.
Currently, Marie is a volunteer with the upcoming production of Brendan Behan's play The Hostage, which opens at Presentation House in North Vancouver on May 14. She has also worked with the North Vancouver Community Players in presenting other plays at Theatre B.C. North Vancouver zone.
Over the past five years, Marie has been a regular on Vancouver Sun Run. Despite being sidelined this year with a foot injury, she will no doubt be back in top form and out training again in no time.
Given her outstanding contributions, Marie is certainly, a most worthy recipient of this year's Woman of the Year Award. When asked if her award was a surprise, Marie said, "I had absolutely no idea, but I was completely delighted." Congratulations Marie, it's about time your substantial contributions to this community were honoured.
Glittering Reunion of Two Screen Legends
LONDON - Veteran actors Peter O'Toole and Richard Harris rolled back the years at the world premiere of the restored Hollywood movie The Lion in Winter. The pair, both 68, were inseparable as they joked and laughed at the exclusive screening at the Curzon Mayfair Theatre in London.
The Lion in Winter, originally filmed in 1968, has been restored by Sony Pictures Entertainment and MGM Studios in collaboration with the Academy Film Archive. An historical classic, the film was nominated for seven Academy Awards including one for O'Toole as Best Actor for his role as King Henry II.
