A Great Weekend at Local GAA Tournament
By JOHN O'FLYNN
VANCOUVER - The Western Canadian Hurling All-Stars and the Seattle Gaels Hurling teams provided an outstanding "clash of the ash" for the numerous spectators in attendance on July 3.
A hard fought match resulted in a deserving draw of five goals and 16 points (31) for the Irish Canadians and six goals and 13 points (31) for the Irish Americans. Thomas O'Flynn of West Limerick Holdings Limited presented a commemorative plaque to the Seattle Gaels team along with the Most Valuable Player award to Seattle's captain Rob Mullin.
In the Ladies Gaelic Football Final for the Kevin McFadden Memorial Trophy the Seattle Gaels cruised to an easy victory over the Fdmonton Wolf tones with a score of eight goals and nine points (33) to three goals and two points (11).
Seattle Gaels' captain Becca Fox received the championship trophy and plaque from Helen McFadden while the tournament MVP, Carlin Acheson from Fdmonton, received her award from Canada's International team selector Jarlath Connaughton.
In the Men's Gaelic Football Final for the J.J. Hyland Memorial Trophy the Vancouver Irish Sporting and Social Club's Harps dominated the Calgary Chieftains with a score of three goals and 21 points (30) to two goals and four points (10).
Long-time Seattle GAA men, John Keane and Finian Rowland, presented the championship plaque to captain James Kirk. The Men's MVP, as selected by Jarlath Connaughton, was Neil O'Connor from the Fdmonton Wolftones.
All the Canadian teams will gather once more in Fdmonton on July 30, 31 to conclude the season of the Western Divisional Board of the GAA. For more information about this upcoming weekend, please contact myself at: oflynn@oflynn.ca or call (604) 929-0683.
