noel lenaghan A Long Time Since
What a pleasant surprise it was for me recently to receive an e-mail and CD from Noel Lenaghan in Belfast.
Not since the old days of the Molly McGuire's Pub in Ottawa (a long time ago) had I heard from Noel and over the years I lost track of him.
The last time I saw Noel, he was with a great group called The Rakish Paddy and they were regular performers at the Molly McGuire's and always attracted a huge following.
Noel is an all around musician. He plays mandolin, tin whistle, guitar, flute and vocals. He also writes a lot of his own material and oaALong Time Since, he has written and composed all the songs.
His repertoire includes traditional songs in English and Irish and he is also a well-respected teacher of the flute. He is based in Galway. Lenaghan's tin whistle and flute playing is mesmerizing and amazing, I can vouch for that.
Noel Lenaghan has travelled and toured all over the world from the United States to Canada to Australia and New Zealand.
There are 11 tracks on the CD and the last track Noel has written a footnote on how it all came about.
He writes: In the late seventies while on tour through the northern cities in the U. SA., I happened upon two musical instruments that had been given up for lost by a touring band from Ireland.
I was going home for Christmas and took it upon myself to bring the lost instruments back to their rightful owners.
We didn't know each other but had a mutual friend in Paul Kelly and it was decided to meet in his mother's kitchen for a tune and the return of the instruments.
There was celebration and jollification that St. Stephen's Day. Mrs. Kelly was pleasantly surprised that people from the North could play Irish music.
"It'll be the music that keeps us together, " was what she said when we were parting company that evening. Noel Lenighan wrote a song about the evening called Mrs. Kel ly's Kitchen.

A Gaelic Christmas
Mary McLaughlin, acclaimed for her lush harmonies and arrangements, brings a collection of timeless holiday songs beautifully performed in the Irish Gaelic language.
A Gaelic Christmas includes traditional Irish carols as well as Gaelic versions of beloved Victorian carols. Musicians include Steve Coulter (harp), Barry Phillips (cello), Stefan Hannigan (percussion, uilleann pipes) and William Coulter (guitar).
Mary McLaughlin's biography covers from Ireland, England and America. Steeped in the Gaelic song tradition of her native Ireland, Mary was born and raised in Northern Ireland.
At the age of 11 she began to learn Gaelic and was influenced by sean nos (old style) singing which she heard in the Donegal Gaeltacht (Irish speaking area). She was also influenced by Latin Church music in early years.
During her adolescence she began to listen to contemporary singer songwriters from the U.S., in particular Joni Mitchell and Paul Simon. These artists not only provided her first models for song writing but also inspired her to develop her vocal harmony skills.
In 1996 she reconnected with her Irish roots and spent the summer in Donegal on an Irish language refresher course, where she learned new songs as well as revising songs from her childhood. This began a whole new love affair with the Irish language and tradition which became her focus for the next decade.
Mary McLaughlin has a soft lilting voice as she sings the traditional airs in the Gaelic language. In this rushed and noisy world, Mary's voice is calm and soothing and just what we need at the Christmas
We can sit down, close our eyes and
listen to the traditional songs of Christmas sung in the beautiful soft Irish language, and contemplate what Christmas is all about.

celtic woman The Greatest Journey Essential Collection
Celtic Woman has it all - totally professional in dress and appearance - they have charm .....and they can sing.
The foundation for Celtic music's popularity outside of Ireland and Europe was previously set by artists Enya and Clannad, along with stage shows Riverdance and Lord of the Dance. To this end, Celtic Woman has been referred to as Riverdance for the voice.
Their show and CDs which feature the orchestra behind them, set the stage to showcase their professional talents and haunting evocative voices.
Celtic Woman consists of six Irish female artists: vocalists Chloe Agnew, Orla Fallon, Lynn Hilary, Lisa Kelly, Alex Sharpe, and fiddler Mairead Nesbitt.
Their repertoire ranges from traditional Celtic tunes to modern songs and, to date, the group has released three albums: Celtic Woman; Celtic Woman: A Christmas Celebration; and Celtic Woman: A New Journey.
They have also undertaken a number of world tours and just checking out their tour schedule can make you dizzy - it is extensive.
The Greatest Journey Essential Collection features the following tracks: The Call; Pie Jesu; Harry's Game; The Butterfly; The Voice; Danny Boy; Orinoco Flow; You Raise Me Up; Shenandoah - The Contradiction; The Isle oflnnisfree; Dulaman; Green The Whole Year Round; Ave Maria; The Sky The Dawn and The Sun; Somewhere Beyond The Sea; Mo Chile Mear and Spanish Lady. SAW DOCTORS TOPS FOR CHARITY
GALWAY - After almost two decades, the irrepressible Saw Doctors are back on top.
Not since 1991 have the band from Tuam topped the Irish charts. But in October they were given the news that their rocked-up version of the Sugababes' hit, About You Now, had put them back at Number One.
The success of About You Now has also brought a huge smile to the faces of Leaving Cert girls at Salerno College in Galway. They convinced the band, and local record outlet Zhivago, to donate all the proceeds of the single to Cystic Fibrosis Ireland, in memory of their classmate Emily Feeney - who died from the illness on December 30 last year.
To date, EU10,000 has been raised
from the CD sales for the Salerno Schoolgirls' Fund.
Manager Ollie Jennings said, "We are delighted to help the girls and such a good cause. Everybody is getting a great kick out of the success of the single.
"I know there were some people out there who might have thought we were dead. We're having a good laugh at that now."
