vey Lowe's weekly radio program to the Chinese Benevolent Association to broadcast a special message beamed at Canadians across Canada. Those who took part in this program were Norah Lowe, the speaker; Lana Wong:, vocalist, and a choir from the Chinese language schools.
Chinese New Year: Chinese and western customs happily mingled on Feb. 10 when the Vancouver Chinese Association of Commerce celebrated Chinese New Year with a novel wing-ding at the W.K. Gardens. More than 450 members and guests attended a lively program which included a 10-course Chinese dinner. With Tim Louie as the capable MC, the entertainment hour was a "sooper-dooper." The ritual of heavenly worship was as realistic as any we have ever witnessed. Led by Scto More in the role of Grand Master and Richard Mar as High Priest, the show began. A barbe cued pig carried to the temple altar by Wesley Yeo and Wilfred Sung: was offered to the God of Heaven. Charlie Kent, Tim Louie and George Y. W. Wong led a phalanx of worshippers― Mrs. Pearl Louie, Mrs. Sandra King, Mrs. Pat Seto, Mrs. Lily Lee and Mrs. Rose Lee―in proffering food and sweetmeats accompanied by the burning of incense and candles to the God, and in return, asked for his blessings. All the while, Wilfred Seto was doing a running commentary for the benefit of occidental guests. Another show-stopper was the fashion parade featuring ancient and modern dresses modelled by Norah Lowe, Susan Chew, Mary Lee, Nancy Wong:, Nellie Lim and Anita Wing. The scene stealers during this part of the program were Mr. and Mrs. Milton Lam's children Eunice, Michael and Nathan who donned Chinese style cheongsam to join the celebration and captured the delight and imagination of the audience. Mrs. Jean Louie was organizer and commentator of the fashion review. The evening's variety bill also included vocal selections by Mrs. Lana Wong, and Chinese operatic songs by Mrs. Mary Gunn, fortune telling by Paul Laiti, photography by Joe Quan, music on the Chinese harp by Charlie Kent and live-wire emceeing by Harvey I力、ve. More than 100,000 firecrackers donated by Peter Chew were set off to launch the affair. And working quietly behind the scenes to make sure of the program's success were the two members of the Commerce Association's office staff, Rose Wong and Seto More.
