THE CHINESE NEW YEAR has ac cenied the now-renowned beauty of Chinese giris by the election of local and national que ons (and you'll be seeing the picture of the latest Chinese-Jamaican quocn in this periodical shortly.)
In our last issue's Centre Spread we gav( you a brief glimpse of the newly-appointed "Miss Chinatown USA" select od that day in San Francisco's Chinatown. Since then we have re-(<'iv(、(l an official photo from the Queen Committee's headquarters, depicting her in the crowning ceremony. Iwia Lee is her namo and she was the only contestant from Hawaii to enter. She is s('(、n on our cover being fittingly iob( (I b\ ',i""» Gong, the retiring national queen.
Miss Keo, a 20-year-old junior at the University of Hawaii, plans to be a librarian. Rut she hardly looks the
part.
The contestants were chosen on the basis of looks, personality and talent. For thv talent portion of the program,
the new queen enthralled the crowd with a spii iicd hula.
Miss Lec lives with h<M pan'nts at 4540 Malia Street, Honolulu, and was chosen to represent Hawaii by Honolulu's Chinese community.
The San Francisco Chinese Chamber of Commerce had chosen a Caroline I\<i\ of the Bay City, to represent Honolulu f)*vcaus«' Miss \ Ice \\ as bo in in the Hawaiian Islands.
However, Honolulu's Chinese community got busy and in two days outfitted Miss Lee with the necessary gowns and accessories and arranged for her flight to San Francisco. She was a last minute surprise entry.
June («on^f "Miss Chinatown USA" of 1958, ended her glorious reign of the Year of the Dog on Feb. 6. A worldwide wave of publicity spotlighted the activities of the 21-><';u old beauty.
