But the scene stealer on festival opening day was palm reader Paul Lam who was swamped with a steady stream of patrons of both sexes. To cope with popular demand he had to have his allotted reading time extended to two extra hours. A big attraction which attracted several hundreds to the CBA headquarters were the free shows : Chinese cooking demonstration by Home Ec lecturer Mrs. Mary Mah, flower arrangements by B.C.'s leading floral designer Mrs. Lea Nelles and water-coloring by prominent artist Betty Ng and suimi painter Paul Wong. The ;jasmine tea at Army, Navy Air Force Veterans in Canada, Unit 280 headquarters was another favorite. It was organized by the Vets Club's ladies committee headed by Mrs. S. W. Leung, Mrs. John Ko Bong, Mrs. John Lim, Mrs. Bob Kent, Mrs. Ted Wong, Mrs. Paul Lee, Mrs. Oa Lim, Mrs. Mabel Loo, Mrs. Susie Lee, Mrs. James Eng, Mrs. Alex Louie, Mrs. Evelyn Mah, Mrs. Bessie Kot Mrs. Eva Jang, Mrs. Jack Lee and many more. More than 400 attended this afternoon bazaar. The variety show the same evening at the Majestic Theatre produced and directed by festival vice chairman Ted Wong radiated with all the color and pageantry of the Orient. Harvey Lowe emceed the production which featured a tableau of traditional New Year rituals enacted by members of Jin Wah Sing Musical and Dramatic Society under the direction of Prof Wong Tao. UBC co-ed Jeanette Wong's parade of fashions of casual and sport-wear modelled by Linda Kwong, Mea-gm\ Mah, Alice Dong:, Jeanette Wong, Kim Mah, and Edmond Wong and commentated by Mrs. Hazel Chong had all the earmarks of a pro performance. The outfits were supplied by Arlberg Sport Haus, Carlyle and Carmichael Wholesales and James Chamber. The lAm brothers, Herbie and Alfie coordinated this program. The baby lion dance by students of the Chinese Catholic School under the supervision of Father Peter Chow was another lively item.
