much larger group of another, culture change is forced on the former, if for no other reason than that the second generation partakes of the values ol both. For some time leaders in the field of behavior science have as sumoci that when change is rapid, social dislocations will be more severe than when change is gradual. Indeed this sounds quit(? logical and many of us could provide examples of the con-.soquonces of rapid change from current events, especially in the field of politics. Likewise, it stands to reason that the lon^or a person or group har; to effect change, the more palatable it will be.
Norman A. Chance (1960) has pointed out however that other factors are involved. He indicates as does Mead that the effects of change vary according to which segments of a culture are subjected to pressures, and to what extent these segments are amenable to change.
Chance lists the following reasons for a rapid but smooth transition among the people he studied (Eskimo):
1. "The people had a predisposition to change already built into their sociocultural system in that a greater-value was placed on adaptability than conformity.
2. "They voluntarily chose to change largo segments of (their) system to fit the Western model.
3. "The majority of the goals associated with these changes are capable of realization.
4. "They participated in the changes together as a group.
5. "Most major alterations in previous life patterns occurred together in such a way as to preserve a total cultui al balance.
6. "The people were able to maintain control over their own internal affairs without outside coercion."
He also feels that institutions undergoing even change whether it be rapid or slow are less predisposed to disintegration than ones undergoing uneven change.
Consider the mosquito as an example. He rarely gets a slap on the back until he goes to work.
Kissing a girl is just like opening a bottle of olives―the first may come hard, but it's a cinch to get the rest.
