Tchou Solves French Mysteries
By CECILE J>ARIS―Pioneer going west packed a pair of pistols, but Parisians going practically anywhere on holiday this year are doing so with a book in either hand. One volume is naturally "The Michelin Guide." A traveling Frenchwoman would rather lose her purse than this red, brick-shaped tome that lists and rates with authority every hotel and restaurant in the land.
The other book is an identically shaped publication in black, red and gold, laid out exactly like the Michelin Guide~but listing (and rating) every spooky building, creepy legend, hidden treasure and centre of witchcraft. The Michelin Guide measures <、v(、ry distance in the land from Notre Dame, on the island in the centre of Paris.
Its spine-tingling rival―the "Guide to the Mysteries of France"―begins with the same noble cathedral and the chilling information that the two

main doors were once completely bound in wrought iron by the devil himself. As horns developed on the joints, the black smith was brought to confess the pact he had made with the forces of evil.
To compensate for these dubious influences, the copper weathercock that dominates the city from 150 feet is filled with relics of Paris patron saints, plus a splinter from the original crown of thorns.
Such esoteric information has France by the ears. The 2 Ms-pound guide is the latest party conversation starter, with guests feverishly turning the pages in the hope that their home town has a more awful reputation than anyone else's.
