THE NEW CAMADlAH
By AL T. MI YADI
1 flicked the cigarette into the rain-swept street. As if drawn by a magnet, it rolled into the gutter. I watched and listened to it smoulder and finally die. Then I turned, and pushed' open the door to the Shanghai Imr.
I walked down to the far end of the fountain and sat down. I ordered coffee, but didn't drink a drop. I simply waited, In a little while, I felt a hand nudge me In..trie: ribs. I looked up. The hand belonged to a huge Filipino, one of. the biggest T had ever seen;. He motioned with his eyes toward the back. ;
"Okay," he said, I: got up. casually and walked toward the kitchen. To -the most suspicious observer it". 'Would seem .that I was simply going to the toilet. I flushed the bowl twice^ That -was the signal for my admittance. There was the door next to the toilet and at my footsteps, it opened.
There was a Japanese youth whom I recognized, who operated the dopr from behind. He commanded a View. of the.. -for wa'.rd progress of all cAistpniors through a slit in the'door. He smiled at me mechanically.
'^Hi, Lucky." .

"What's the: matter? You're hot 'doing so good^' I said; '((_ He grinned again. He motioned for me to take a seat. I did.
"Play?" he a?ked. . ''Okay; I'm game." .; "How much?" he asked. "A half buck/' . . ,
.He snorted' contemptuously. He dealt me a soft 17 and dealt himself a blackjack;
I smiled at hiin. . ;

so. You wait." He motioned for the boss. A thick set immaculately dressed Filipino smoking a cigar came over. The dealer whispered to him. The Filipino nodded.
"Okay. I take 'em all/' the. dealer said/
He passed the cards. I ' took'' quick look at my first card. It was an ace. Then, I squeezed for the other. It was a queen. ."Blackjack!" He paid me $150! "What you bet this time?" "Can'I bet all of it?'' "Okay."
I hit .blackjack again. He fumbled for a-.book. He NVrote a figure in Chinese on a receipt book, got off his stool and walked to the cashier's window to present it.
.He came back to the. table and pushed $375 toward me.
I picked them up. and- folded them .carefully and put them away in my wallet.
"Whatsmatta, you no play no more?"
"No," v. :
"Ah," he leaned back and sneered, "you chicken, eh?'V "Yeah/'
"Come on, come on!" he scolded furiously, "You . don't want to be chicken ? Come on!" I laughed:
'Then I walked out. The youth at. the .door smiled as he opened the door. "Win?"; he asked:-'"Yeah." / : ; V
"You lucky,'? he said. I Went to the toilet and washed up. My face was hot, my hands still sticky \vith : perspira-.tioiv. Slamming the toilet door shut,; I went over to the fountain up front and sat db\yn. .1 sat there for a while sipping my coffee quietly, I was happy; Maybe that wasn't the word for it but in any event I was feeling good. \^Tho wouldn't after picking up a quick $575 winnings? I" kept thinking of all the times I had come here before, of all the time's I had lost, 'in-total; I realised that I still had lost more than I had won.
"You win?", asked the voice next to me. It was a high pitched
voice, v - '".'
I turned to acknowledge the
question. . .
He was Chinese, old, and with the traditionally bent shoulders. "Yeah," I said. ' >'/'., ; ."You. lucky!" ..""-.'
