Singles Event Slated For AN Gym To-Day
Singles event of the Nisei .Shuttle Open starts this afternoon (April 14) at the All Nations Gym. Entrants will be vying for the Sam Yamada Challenge Trophy, .symbolic of singles supremacy, which will be . left open this year as the present-, title holder Oscar Hatashita will not'..be able, to defend the crown.
According to reports many new faces w-il.l be out to try to'.luck along .with the veterans. Players still'.wishing to enter should contact their club, reps or Roy Shin IMMEDIATELY.
Already two "ginnes down, Metro suffered a further setback when Kay Iloriuchi: and ISpse Ito went doxy it to <j)ot Shoji-Sue Iwasaki for a double, loss, making the score <M) from which Metro never recovered at Trinity just coasted in. .,'. '.': -,-." : .
One of the few Metro bright spots came when Emy Nakai-Mary -Sait'o .bested Lyn Tsuji and Molly Tanaka m both matches. Ike Matsui'and. Kay Iloriuchi lost n glorious chance rof winning t wo points against Molly Tanaka and George Shintani as they took a 14 pointlead in both games on 1 y t o let t he 1 end frit t er away to 15-M losses. One of several post-season badminton tourneys slated in Toronto, the JCCA Junior Invitational for players 24 years and under was put on record recently at the All Nations Gym with up and coming shuttlist Ron Matsumoto copping two titles.
Matsumoto won the' men's doubles title with Nick Kaji and the mixed with Laiko Miyake.
The ladies doubles crown fell to Tosh Takasaki and Mary Shintani. ;'.--.,
Victim of Mntsumoto^ inarch to the crown in both instances was Tom Matsui who put up terrific yrse't. battles. before conceding. Alatsui and. Dick A'rai took a closo first set 15r12 but the winners, showing superior team work, won the second 17-1.4 and walked away with the third 15-6 as the challengers fell apart.
The niixed doubles was 'touch, and go. Mary Shintani and Matsui i won ihe initial set 15-8 but Ron and Laiko took the second 15-10. The final set had the spectators gasping as both teams battled j point by point up to 12-12 xinti'I Tom threw away all chances of winning by taking two shots which looked to be obvious outs.
. The weary Nisei .Flyers, worn down from the long and gruelling four-garhe series with Regent AC in-the "A" group finals intermixed iith several King Clancy games, bowed out-of the.running for the elusive THL Junior "A" city title when .they dropped' the-best of three semi-final round1 against Corpus 'Chris-' ti 9-0. and'3-2 last week.;' . Lady Luck looked the other way throughout this series .for the Elvers. In the opener, a long drifter fired.by a GC player in an attempt to clear from his own blue-line proved to be the undoing of the Elyers as the puck rolling down the ice, hopped over goalie. Bill Kii.rysh's stick for a gift goal. The bewildered Elyers, thereafter, couldn't do a thing right and Corpus Chirsti pushed nine pucks past the Fly--'ers for their .biggest loss yet.

Thus the long grind of Flyers towards the "A" title Avas ended but it proved to manager Mas Nakao and the players that they were just as good as their opposition and with niore reserve could have made the finals. WIX GROUP TITLE
A "hey-rube" highlighted the fourth game of the group finals as Flyers completely outplayed Regent AG for a 4-1 win which had advanced them into the ill-fated series with Corpus Christi, the CYO chami>s.
When Regents realized that the game was out of their hand?, 'tempers reached the boiling point and as soon as Key Tanaka and a Regent began pushing each other, the ice became a sea of discarded sticks and gloves as all the players -mixed -it up. Tlie t\vo referees were helpless bystanders and only the bell that signalled the end of the game put an end to the fray. But-first to congratulate the team, was the Rege.nt inanager and later the rest of the Regent team as well
