The fact that steam engines aie gradually being replaced % Diesets indicates that one more thing to which we have grown accustomed will soon be referred to nostalgically as belonging to the "good ol days".
It has been my pleasure to see steam engines fussed over by "carknockers" and then getting up' steam to chug away.
When the conductor gives the "highball" signal to the engineer leaning out of the cab, the locomotive with its firebox blazing begins to jolt and bounce and then heaves and puffs out of the station. Leaving behind the switches, the signals and the.maze of tracks, the locomotive picks up speed, belching steady puffs of smoke and moves on over the bright steel rails with a slight camellike sway. As the locomotive nears the crossing her stout whistle starts to shriek loud and long, emitting a mournful and lonely quality of warning. This faraway Availing of the whistle gives me a sort of eerie feeling that is an unique ex-
perience. '>
Also; in the deed of night when most activitiei have stopped the noises of the railway yard are sometimea comforting to hear. The smell of smoke and grease, the chug-chug of the engines and the shuntings of trains create an atmosphere all their ownlonely yet friendly.
Diesels, however, are more practical because they are cheaper to operate and haul more freight than the stearfx chuggers. The Diesels wilt undoubtedly gain a large following of fans who will also be reluctant to see Diesels replaced by coal-fired turbine engines which are predicted to cost as half as much as the Diesels. And there's an atomic engine, too, in the blueprint stage.
With the march of time they will each have their heyday and thus leave behind their sentimental devotees. It is in the whole scheme of modern civilization that one invention is outmoded by another better one, the condition which spells material progress.
