MY SHOPPING LIST TO THE NEWLY FOgMED LIBERAL CHINESE LIBERAL ASSOCIAJTON
Dear Mr. Wong and the Chinese Liberal Association,
My friends tell me that one of the reasons why you were picked as the president of the newly formed Chinese Liberal Association!is your close connection to the * inner circle" of the Liberal/s key players.
As an activi,st who has been working in the Chinese commuriity for a number of years f I would like to present to you a list of issues which) if implementedP would greatly benefit the Chinese community:
UNDER PROVINCIAL LEVEL (ONTARIO)
《1) Passage of a Bill that would recognize, permit and encourage the teaching of heritage language during school; day. -
This is a long standing issue among Chinese Canadian residents Our children would be able to communicate with parents, gain self-confidbnce and be better prepared for the future job market. Bill 80, (proposed by Tony Grande NDP MPP) should be passed during the coming fall session at Queenfs Park.
(2) ! Establish a 24 hour
telephone hot line .for translation purpose>
Imagine an elderly lady living alone feeling very ill in the middle of the night- She speaks no English ^h6 has few relatives. How can she'contact 911? Car accident, 1 little girl got hit-mother speaks no English. How can she talk to the police? Or to the doctors at Sick Children's Hospital? 24 hour translation service should be made available to all ethnic communitiesf especially in Metropolitan) Toronto, where many residents speak little English-
) i |rovide t undinq for a
Chines^ legal sidclinic。
Non-English speaking Chinese Canadians are denied access to Ontario's legal system- This is a shocking fact as there is no Chinese speaking legal aid worker across Metropolitan Toronto. UNDER FEDERAL LEVEL:
The Liberals are not in power, but should stilL make immigration
an issue.
(4》 Over J\ years old sons ar^d daughters should be pact of the family class so they cam immigrate.to Canada.
It is not useful to say that Liberals believe in family reunification without spelliag oat specific policy; especially when the Liberal track record shoved a decline, of almost 40,000 immigrants per year between 81-84 when Liberals were the government. (Most of these 40,000 potential-immigrants-per-year have families in Canada.) When can we hear a statement1 fzdm
the leader of the Liberal; Party (Federal) specifying that immiqfa nts create jobs, (not taking them away) and Canada needs at least 130,000 immigrants fojo 1987 in order to balance pur declining birth rate. UNDER MUNICIPAL LEVEL AT ^TORONTO CITY HALL.
Implemeat usage ot iaultiliin-gual ballots. x '
Multilingual ballots encourage participation, facilitate bdtter understanding of the qoverrintent system, and provide access tio voting for citizens whose languages are. not English. Since

The Toronto Chinese business Association represents a large number of businesses located on Spadina between Queen Street and College Street. :|

^ight0 left turn. Ml these spell DISASTER. ,
The Left-turn system would create so much confusion and increase the number bf left
turning cars that traffic chaos t is inevitable. This, coupled with additional cars going j through the residential 9traffic maze0 in order to find the right ®one-way9 street to get onto the right spot to turn is going to drive people crazy.
The wide sidevalk aXangi Spadina is a delight to valic on. Narrowing it is bound to take away some of its charm*
Unless some modificatiotis are. made to address these issues, ve cannot support the p^esentr proposal. 《
Moving passengers efficiently is a necessary, may be even admirable task, but jNOT at ^he ipense of this unique part] of lovntovn Toronto vhxch took our
