"The Journey" Is Jews Of Italy New U.J.A. Support Claims
Film Oi Israel Of Israel
"The Journey," a new film depicting the arrival of newcomers to Israel and their problems of readjustment there, has been released <by the United Jewish Appeal for exhibit. Produced in Israel for the Appeal by John Ferno and directed by Robert Capa, "The Journey" tells the story of a group of immigrants with widely different backgrounds who arrive to start life afresh, their initial processing at a reception camp, and their journey to a settlement where their
dreams of a homeland become a reality.as'they <begin to till the land and build their homes.
Combining the authenticity of a documentary with a striking and personal drama, "The Journey", begun in Israel last fall, is introduced by Henry Morgenthau, Jr., honorary chairman of the United Jewish Appeal and chairman of the Board of Governors of the American Financial and Development Corporation for Israel. He was general chairman when work on "The Journey" started, and recalls a .visit to the settlement of Tal Schachar, named in his honor. The story of this settlement in the Ju-<lear,i hills calls to the inarrator's mind the tremendous work of building the new nation of Israel in other places, "along the Jordan, in the Galilee, across the Negev."
At the close of the film, Edward M. M. Warburg, general chairman of the 1951 United Jewish Appeal, urges the audience to remember the urgent tasks confronting Israel still and the threat of lack of time which " menaces the future of 200,OOQ homeless Jews in other countries waiting to go to the new state. Throughout "The Journey" the great tasks confronting the people of Israel, the immediate need for housing and agricultural settlements to accommodate the mounting influx of new arrivals are made apparent as the narrative unfolds against the magnificent scenic background of Israel's hills and field. ;
There is the arrival of an immigrant ship in Haifa. The excitement of the moment, as the long-held dreams of the newcomers approach realisation. reflected Jn their fases. The drama of iStftfttr with relatives, the joyous reception by the crowd who have come to welcome them, bring borne the narrator's assertion that "no door will ever again be slammed in their faces." They are a heterogeneous lot, these (newcomers from so many different countries, speaking a variety of languages but all eager to be constructive citizens of their new land. At the reception camp they are interviewed and tell of their readiness to start work.
But it is with Egon, a former Rumanian student, that "The Journey" is mow concerned. Young and sensitive, he is uncertain of his future and yearns to become a doctor. His knowledge of Hebrew is insufficient, however, and he must go to a kibbutz to build with his hands, along with the others. Egon's journey to a new settlement in Galilee and. his gradual adjustment to the life of a pioneer brings "The Journey" to its dramatic climax. In the course of its brief story, "The Journey" offers intimate glimpses of settlement life, the excitement of building, planting and transforming a "raw kibbutz" into a civilized settlement. These phases of the United Jewish Appeal'a role in rescue and resettlement are made graphically clear in this film, which runs for 26 minutes.
The Fourth Congress of the Union of Jewish Communities in Italy, in Rome, was addressed by Dr. Shlomo Ginossar, Israeli Minister in Home, and by representatives of international Jewish organizations. On behalf of the World Jowi&ii Congress executive, Dr. Gcrhurd M. Riegner stressed the necessity to "ke vigilant in face of common daingers which, in many parts of the globe are threatening vital centres of Jewish life", to devote all c.iorU of the Jewish community .u i:.j'strengthening of the State of Israel ar.d to "develop common action in defence of Jewish right and intcrt^.a .n the Diaspora".
The Congress approved a resolution \vhich p: irl tii -iue to the work of the World Jewish Congress in the defence of Jewish rights', to its continued efforts at the United Nations and in other international bodies, and expressed appreciation for the help given to Italian Jewry "in the political, cultural and legal fields".
The resolution pledged continued affiliation of Italian' Jewry to, and fraternal co-operation with, the World Jewish Congress, and called on "all representative communities of national character which still have not affiliated to the World Jewish Congress to do so". Hope was also expressed for the resumption of Congress work in Eastern Europe. Resolutions were also approved strongly supporting the reparation claims of Israel against Germany, protesting against clemency shown to war criminals and registering strong protest aginst German rearmament. Signer .Raf-f aele Cantoni, member of the World Jewish Congress executive, was re-elected president of the Union of Jewish Communities in Italy for another five-year term.
