American Helps Poultry Farms
The application of "know-how" and perseverance pays off in Is-.rael. In 1945, Michael Pack, a successful U. S. poultry raiser from Lakehurst, N. J., while visiting Israel, concluded that meat poultry raising there was costly and yielded a poor quality bird. He proposed that Israel adopt U. S. methods, utilizing the meet advanced knowl-
edge of scientific feeding and breeding, not only to save valuable foreign exchange, cut poultry costs and improve and increase the yield of chicken, but also to introduce a new industry in Israel with export possibilities.
Mr. Pack convinced members of Kibbutz Kfar Menachem, south of Rehovoth, Israel, to txy his method of raising specialized fowl, from chick to marketable size, for meat purposes only. His belief in his idea was backed up by an actual investment of about $15,000. In addition

Harold, son of Mr. and Mrs. Noiman Neslen, 6a MoRae Drive, was called to the Reading of the Law at Minsker Synagogue, in celebration of his bar-mitzvah. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. I. Dzaldowsky, Hilton Avenue. There was an open house following the services at home; and a family supper in the evening. Mrs. Neslen received one hundred guests at home, wearing a turquoise-blue print nylon sheer afternoon dress, fashioned with low neckline, cap sleeves, and full skirt; with corsage of red roses. Assisting were aunts of the bar-mitzvah boy, Mes-dames J. Bailen, Montrose Avenue, in a navy-blue sheer dress; I. Kress, Garnet Avenue, a black crepe dress: M. Zekto, Elm Grove Avenue, a blue print crepe dress, each with a corsage of red roses. At the supper the candles were lit by; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Neslen, parents; Mr. and Mrs. I. Dzaldow-sky, grandparents-; Mr. and Mrs. M. Zeldo, Mr. and Mrs. J. Bailen, Mr. and Mrs. I. Kress; Mrs. A. Shteebleman, of Copenhagen, Denmark; Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Lubek, Northcliffe Boulevard; Mr. and Mrs. S. Harris, College Street; Mr. and Mrs. P. Neslen, Yonge Street; Mr. and Mrs. M. Plant, Robert Street. Harold's cake was in the s'hape of a large blue and white Bible. He made a speech in English at the supper. Samuel Harris,-College Street, WAS master of ceremonies. Van-coloured late spring flowers were on the table. Mr. and Mrs. B. Bourk, of Detroit, Mich., were there.
Bernard, son of Mr. and Mrs. Max Koffman, 331 Glenholme Avenue, was called to the Reading of the Law at Beth Sholom Synagogue, in celebration of his bar-mitzvah. He is the brother of Morris, Molly, a/r.d Pearl. At tine dinner next day at Apter Centre, Mrs. Koffman received one hundred and sixty guests; in a beige lace gown, with corsage of red roses. Miss Molly Koffman assisted in a blue nylon cocktail dress, with corsage of pink roses. Those who lit the candles were: Mr. and Mrs. I. Ungermanv, Dewtoourne Avenue; (Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Koff-tman, Manning Avenue; Mr. land Mrs. M. Wasser, Dew-bourne Avenue; Mr. and Mrs. Jack Ungerman, Elm Ridge Drive; Mr. and Mrs. Irving Urigemian, Elm Ridge Drive; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Pine, of New York; Mrs. H. to this he trained members of Kfar Menachem (wbo came to the United States at his expense), shipped bo Israel building materials for chicken coops amd chicken1 feed, gave detailed instructions by letter on how to erect the chicken houses, and on) the raising and management of the enterprise. Finally, in 1950, the first batch of chickens was ready for the market.
As a result of this experiment alone, 50,000 to 60,000 pounds of chicken meat were made available to Idle Israel people. The birds were of ^"a much higher quality than those available in Israel, they had .much more meat, and sold below the price of other chickens in Israel. Even- the first trial run netted a profit.
Israel has a shortage of all types of food, especially meat. The chic* ken industry is ideal .for Israel because chicken raising under present methods calls for about four .pounds of grain feed for each pound of chicken meat obtained an' amount of grain far lower than is required to raise beef.
This new chicken industry for Israel envisions mass production on a highly specialized' oasis. Hatcheries wili constitute one of the branches of the industry; specialized poultry growing farms, which would grow chickens from baby chicks to marketable size, would constitute a not her .unit; layers for egg production would form still another branch. In addition there would be special branches for processing and distribution.
Children are not clean instinctively and don't take naturally to the use of soap and water. They must be carefully trained to wash their hands before eating and to brush their teeth immediately after.
wasser, of New York; Mr. jfnd Mrs. Max Koffman, the parents; Morris, his brother, Molly and Pearl, his sisters, and Bernard, the bar-mitzvah boy. John Pollock, Leonard Avenue, and Morris Koffman, were masters of ceremony. Bernard's cake was in the shape of an open Bible. Vari-coloured roses, carnations, snapdragons, and white lighted tapers, decorated the tables. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Pino, Mrs. S. Goldwasser, and Morris Koi'fman, all of New York were guests.
Kennc Lh, &on of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Axmith, 11 Overdale Road; brother of Lynne; grandson of Mr. and Mis.. Jacob Green, 19 Division Street; and Of Mr. and.
