MONTREAL MEETINGS
� Khayyam Z. Paltiel, executive director of the Windsor, Ontario, Jewish Community Council, was awarded the N. J. Klausner Memorial Fellowship for the 1958-59 academic term at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel. Dr. Samuel Cass, chairman of the national awards committee of the Canadian, Friends of the Hebrew University, made the announcement. Mr. Paltiel, who will study in Israel towards a Ph.D. in Political Theory and Economics, is a B.A. graduate of McGill University where he earned first class honours in Economics and Political Science and was awarded the Allan Oliver Gold Medal and the Alexander McKenzie - Graduate Fellowship in 1943. He was award-e<l an-M;A. decree at-the- University of Toronto in 1944, and returned to McGill as a teaching fellow and special lecturer on the Faculty of Graduate Studies for Ph.D. degree in Economics from 1946 to 1960. For the past ten years Mr. Paltiel has neld administrative posts in Jewish communal service. He assumed his present post with the Windsor Jewish Community Council in 1953, having served previously as Western Canada director of public relations fcnd/community or-ffaniaation�for� the Canadian-Jew� ish Congress. Mr. and Mrs. Paltiel and their four children will take up residence in Jerusalem in time for the opening of the 1968-59 academic term at the Hebrew University yearly in November. The bequest of scholarships, mak-. Ing possible one or. more awards each year for Canadian students was established by the family and trustees of the estate of the late N. J. Klausner, of Vancouver* B.C., in accordance with his interest in education with regard to democracy and peace.

pate in a festival of Israeli music, song, and dance, at the annual Simchat Torah celebration of Keren Haturbut, on Tuesday, October 7, at 8:00 p.m., at Shaare /ion Academy. This program is under the direction of Mr. and Mrs. J. Friedman, of Israel. Miss Channah Abramson, president of the Montreal Branch of the Movement and a member of the group that visited Israel this year under the joint auspices of Keren Ha-tarbut and the youth and chalut-ziut commission of the United Zionist Council of Canada, will speak on "Our Visit ~In -Israel".

� Lazarus Phillips, 48 Belvedere Place, Montreal, has been named a recipient of the Louis Marshall Award of The Jewish "Theological Seminary of America, one of the highest tributes accorded by the Seminary to laymen for "dedication to the spiritual and cultural betterment of our people." Mr. Phillips will receive the award at the dinner of the Seminary's National Patrons Society, on October 26, at the Hotel Pierre, in New York. The award honors the memory of Louis Marshall, famed American constitutional lawyer who died in 1929. Mr. Marshall was chairman of the Seminary board of directors from 1904 until his death and was noted for his communal and philanthropic endeavors as a leading American. Other leaders will also receive Louis Marshall Awards at that time. In addition to training students as rabbis and teachers, the Seminary is nationally known for its award-winning radio series, "The Eternal Light" : the television series, "Frontiers Of Faith"; its Library of Hebraica and Judaica; and the Institute for Religious and Social Studies, a graduate school for clergymen of all faiths.
