Mr. Perlove was a member of Bnai Brith Sportsmen's Lodge.
The following article, headed: "Joe Perlove: Turf Writer Caught Mood Of $2 Plunger", is from the Toronto Globe And Mail:
Joe Perlove, a turf writer for the Toronto Daily Star since 1937, died of cancer. He was 60.
He was known as The Colonel, Perly, or Pal Joey. He devoted his life "tryfng to devise a system to beat the horses and was still involved in this research when he-died. T
He was always eager to recommend sure \yinners to hiffriends. The only consolation they^ had when these surefire tips finished far up the track was that Perloye also speculated heavily on his selection.
He seldom missed a day at the 'races. The fact that he was also supposed to cover these activities for his newspaper was incidental. He had a rapport with the. average bettor and his track stories usually reflected the dreams, the hopes, and often the misfortunes of the $2 plunger.
Although racing was his major beat for the Star, he also covered baseball, which suited his refined tastes because it enabled him to take winter vacations in Florida during the training season. He often went to the Kentucky Derby; championship boxing bouts; and the World Series, He also covered National Hockey League games. He took a particular delight in. writing about professional wrestling in a mock-serious style.
In 1960 he was honored by Toronto Sportsmen's Lodge, Bnai Brith, as the man of the year.
The Perloves came originally from Russia. His father, Louis, came to Canada in 1902. Joe attended Jarvis Collegiate Institute where, he said, "1 majored in squash and snooker." He started writing sports on space rates.
