At the close of the luncheon, E. M. Berliner called for further donations from the floor to help wipe off a deficit, offering to contribute additionally five percent, of the amount raised. He was joined in this offer by Ben Levinson, and by Ernest Albert, Felix Leopold, Mrs. Felix Leopold, Harry Rother, J. Horowitz, Abe Dobrovsky, Mrs. S. D. Lichtenheim, Jacob Stewart, J. Elkin, all of whom pledged themselves to contribute one per cent, of the amount collected. Starting with donations by Louis Wolfe and Martin Simon, many cards were made out by the workers. Articles were offered by Ben Isaacs, George Rotsky, George Shapiro, Harry Shaer, Nathan Cummings, that were auctioned off for the benefit of the fund. The sum of $7,500 was raised in this way and applied to the deficit fund.

The Bnai Jacob Synagogue Sisterhood under the able leadership- of . Mrs. Rosenstein and Mrs. S. ilosen did much to assist Federation in its recent drive. 'The men of the congregation under the presidency of Mr. Jacob Latt have been meeting-regularly to arrange all matters of congregational interest. The Sunday School with an enrollment of 200 has started with all expenses incurred by the Sunday School defrayed by the Young People's^Society. The personnel .of the staff is as follows: Chairman of the' Sunday School committee, Joseph Shapiro; prirrcipal, Frank -Godine; teachers, Misses Ada Price, Sarah Klineberg, Bertha Katz, Misses Cossman, Goldie Bessner, M. Shaffer, Hilda Lasker, Jacobs and Messrs." Fogel, Harris and Mendel Segal. Mr. Godine deserves a great deal-of credit for the able and efficient, manner <ui , which he has conducted the Suaday , School.
The Young People's Society has arranged to hold its annual formal dance at the Mount Royal Hotel on January 16. The dance committee consists of Miss Anna Klein and Messrs. Al Ragmsky and J. Shapiro. NEW Y.M.H.A. GYMNASIUM TO BE OPENED
Last season the Intermediafe basket-> ball team won the City Championship and were invited" to pfey wit� the M.A.A.A. Reds, ServjpTv Ghampic*Si fc* the right to represent Montreal for the ~ Dominion title. Playing a splendid game, they defeated the "M.AAJ^and / thus became Montreal* leading basket- "* ball team.
When it was then found that for the coming season, the team, now in senior company, had no adequate gymnasium, Moe Leavitt, the efficient captain of the basketball team, called a meeting of some of the most active members of the Y.M.H.A., and jt was decided to ask the board of directors tocarry oh a' drive for funds. Mr. Moe Leavitt was appointed chairman of the drive committee with Mr. M. Goldberg as treasurer, and enough money was raised to commence the building.
The new gymnasium is of brick and steel, and is 68 feet long" and 51 feet wide inside. The basketball court is 65 x 35 feet. Collapsible bleachers at the sides wHl provide a seating capacity for about 350 people. When used for dancing, about 250 couples can be comfortably accommodated. As an auditorium, it can seat 800 people. The gymnasium i* well lighted and has "*a fine heatmg arid ventilating system.

Jewish playwright, will visit Montreal, and will deliver an address at the Windsor Hail, on the evening of November 25, under the auspices of the Jewish People's Library. Mr. Saul Brant, the violinist, will play. Mr. Peretz Herschbein who is the author of "Green Fields," the play in which Montrealers saw Ben Ami some months ago, was*in vMontreal some six years ago. He was bom in Russia and travelled the world over, only recently returning from a trip to South Africa. He wrote "The Idle Inn" and "The Blacksmith's Daughter" and was interested in the Little Theatre Movement. Two hundred and fifty books have been added to the Jewish library.
