Millions are awakening lo iKe fact that friendship wíth the Söviet is for our own sake^ for Canada .
By DYSON CARTER, Presidenty Canadian-Soviet Friendship Society
LAST WEEK, friends of mine b.ought a television set. Why? So they could see Soviet moviesl It's a fact that the CBC shows Soviet films even in Québec. -
Another friend b-ied hard to get a ticket for an ex-clusive dinner, so he could hearGerald Clark, just back írom the USSR. Clark is speaking to packed áudiences.
For the first time in eight^ years, millions of Canadiaiis are reading newspaper art-iclés, by Canadians, about life in the Soviet Union. As for our businessmen, it is not vlcious anti-Soviet slanders v^hich interest them töday, but factuai reports aboüt the prosperoits eco-nomy Qf the USSR, about oppor-tunitles for trade. ^ •
These are aspects írf the new situation in Canada/ aé Canadian-Soviet Friendship Montti begins. It is a very interesting: change. I know that it gladens all true friends of the Soviet people.
But it raises a áhaip chaUenge. In thls new and much healthier situation there are real dangers for us.
What is thls "big change"? Is it simply that Information servi-ces, such as the CBC, Canadian Press, and Weekend Magaziné, ceirry ipore reaswiable reports of Soviet üíe than before?
Thls is a sign of the basic change. °What is happening in Can-

ada goes very deep in our national life.
Already big sections of our jio-pulation are beginning to see a great, hlstoric truth. Priendly re-lations between Canada and out neighbour to the north are wliat we Canadians urgently need to make sure of ^ a peaceful, prospe-rous, independent future for our country.
That is the change. Millions are awalcening to the fact that friendship with the Soviet Union is íor our own Mke, for Canada.
It is not too easy to see what this mearis. I linow of one man who is swaggering around, shak-ing his finger under the nosea of hls worlunates, and saying to them, "See... I told you so!"
Of course it is nice to b« able to prove that you've laeen right all along. That the Soviet people eat weU. have beautiful cities, see wonderful shows, are more pros-perous than ever in history, and so on, But the attitűdé of "I told you so" won't help to build friendship.
Even worse ia the fellow who hears somé friend express, for the first time. a little sympathy for the USSR, TTien he beats him over the head with a "political argu-ment".
Talking that way misses the whole poinL The point today is that friendship between Canada and the Soviet Union is develop> ing on a new hasis. Many millions of Canadian people. who do not agree with the economic and tural Rclations with Forcign | political structure of the USSR.
FRANK Anderson of Toronto (above) has challenged Soviet ehess master Bondarcvsky for a cable match and it was accepted. The match was held publicly at Toronto's Hobby Show last wcek.
From Prof. Andrel Denisov, pre-sident of VOKS (Soviet Society íor Cultural Rclations with Forcign Countrics) the íollowing cable was rcceived on the occa-sion of the Canadian-Soviet Friendship Month. Febnmry:

doubtful if one Canadian in 20 has ever seen a Soviet movie. And becsüse it is very expensive to ad-vertise, even in February not one Canadian in 100 will hear a word' about the wonderful new Soviet movie showings.
There is a real chaUenge to us, to find outwhen and where the shows WiU be held locally. Then wé can make a definite date to take the family, or the girl friend' or boy friend. .
And then we must take ad-vantage of the new situation. In-vite two or. two dozen more people td see what they*ve never seep before, movies that show them with their eyes what Itfe is like in the Soviet'Union!
This year it isn't hard to get strangers out to see a Soviet movie. If we who have already seen Soviet f"'m^ do that, all acro-c

Thus, when. they speak of Soviet wages they say, th^ruble is worth only five cents. But when they give the' price of a l;efrigerator, up goes the ruble to 25 cents!

There íls a very big' change tak-ing place in Ganada, But the job of building lé^v friendship bet-.ween the Canadian people and the : Soviet people Is a job that must be done by those who are cloaest ,lo the peqple.
