Hockey star playing the field and her future
Richmond field hockey player has been selected to join Canada's junior women's training camp.
KYLEBERGER STAFF REPORTER
When she was six years old, Richmond's Mindy Cohen quit softball to take up the faster sport of field hockey. Ten years later
Mindy Cohen shoots for her goals.
the switch is paying off with her selection to attend Canada's junior women's field hockey training camp.
"I found [soflball] was too slow," said Ms. Cohen. "So I wanted to quit that and my mom was talking to another mom and I got involved [with field hockey] that way."
Ms. Cohen, now 16, was selected as one of 18 girls from B.C. and 45 across Canada to join the camp in Waterloo, Ont., this summer, kicking ofTa three-year program aimed at preparing the athletes for the junior world cup in 2001.
"I'm really proud of the fact that I made this team because I know that there are a lot of really good B.C. players," said the
Talmud Torah grad. "I'm just amazed that the coach saw something in me."
It's not only the coach who recognized her talent. Ms. Cohen, who has always played for the Richmond Eagles organization, was named the team's most improved player in 1995 and won the sportswoman of the year award in 1996. In the same year she played for the local zone team in the B.C. Summer Games and brought home a bronze medal.
Ms. Cohen's future goals have a patriotic cormection and very few boundaries. "I really would love to play for Canada," said the Grade 11 student at Hugh Boyd secondary school. "I want to make the national team and play for Canada. Eventually it would be pretty neat to play in the Olympics but I'm just kind of taking it step by step and I just want to improve as much as I can."
Ms. Cohen credits much of her success to her two coaches. Lance and Nancy Carey, who have worked with her since she started playing the game. "They have been a big influence on me," said the midfielder/defender. "They've been with me for a long time and they've kind of shaped field hockey for me and kept me going. Also my parents have been really supportive for actually taking me to all these games. They've been rc-ally good with that."
While she hopes eventually to attend university on a field hockey scholarship, Ms. Cohen says there are a few aspects of the game she still needs to improve. "I really want to work on getting my confidence high because when it is that's when I play my best. I also want to work on my strength to hit the ball and work on my accuracy." □
