A middle-aged woman came to a Chassidic Rabbi to complain about her troubles. Her husband had deserted her and she had not heard from him for over a year. The Rabbi was busy, so his personal Shammes told the woman to state her request on a slip of paper and the holy man would give her his answer in writing.
Half-an-hour later the Shammes emerged from the Rabbi's private study, and handed the woman his master's words. The woman read beamingly: "Your husband will come back."
After the woman had left, however, the Shammes exclaimed to all the Chassidim present. "But I contend that this woman's husband will never come back!"
" What makes you say that ?" shouted the Chassidim present.
"Don't you understand?" said the Shammes. "The Rabbi saw only the woman's note, but I saw her face."
LONG MARTYR NOT JEW
Dr. Carl Weiss, the man who sacrificed his life to take that of the Louisiana Kingfish Long, is not a Jew. Dr. Weiss was a Catholic, a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Baton Rouge, and attended services there regularly. He was married to a Catholic woman, and the funeral rites at his burial were conducted by priests.
