By SAM MORRIS O OUTHWEST from Beersheba lies Kelta. We rode across the O empty desolation over an ancient trail hewn through the desert by the passage, first of camels, and then of heavy motorized vehicles. The Kibbutz was sprawled out on a rise overlooking the bare Negev. A few wooden structures with the smoke billowing skywards* some scattered tents, and a cement tower stood out in sharp incongruity against the background of wasteland.
Kelta was built two and a half years ago, the day after the fast of Yom Kippur. Eleven Kibbutzim mushroomed in the Negev that night. The first faint flickers of light and life other than the Bedouin nomads shattered the sleeping silence of centuries. Theirs is the heartbreaking task of bringing the bloom of colour to a yellow dustbowl untouched by human hands for ages; only the wind and the scanty rainfall has left Its mark here. Yet 2,000 years previous this had been a fertile region, the wheat belt of Arabia, and today the neglect of centuries lies like a black pall on this oblique area.
For miles around me there was

nothing" — But the unbroken monotony of yellow desert. From our truck, I could see in the distance this small, black shajife of a man outlined against the drabness as he vtralked along kicking; up a cloud of dry dust. Only the camel train, with its Bedouin riders, their kef-fias and chattus flowing gaily in the slight breeze, and looking like a page out of the ^'Arabian Nights" seemed to belong, and blended well with the bleakness as they rode (>ast us, waving their hands in greeting.
★ ★ * WHEN I ARRIVED in Kelta the deadness of the scene was in sharp I contrast to the beehive activity of the camp. I jumped off the truck. A few youthful men and women casually looked towards the vehicle and then turned away to carry on with their appointed tasks. One of the onlookers, a slim youngster clad in dirty grease-stained khaki overalls, walked over to me with a big friendly greeting on his smiling face. He introduced himself as Menachem Chazan and offered to act as my guide and Hebrew interpreter after I explained my reasons for visiting Kelta.
"Would you like to see our bakery?" he asked me.
"Yes, verj' much! I would like to see ever}rthing that makes this Kibbutz tick," I replied.
I was led into a prefabricated wooden structure reinforced on the inside with a cement wall made from manure and mud. The oven-fresh odor of baking bread wafted to me.
"This bakeiry kept producing all througii the fighting," Menachem stated proudly. "Today it not only supplies all our needs, but feeds the first aiid only cafe in Beersheba, We plan to build a bigger bakeshop so that we can be the source of supply for the grbWing Beersheba market.
I noticed that the conversational trend always emphasized the future. Not today—but tomorrow, will it be bountiful! Other of the settlers followed out this same pattern of thought, revealing to me an unquenchable belief In the inevitable destined fruition of this parched and empty wilderness.
"We are planting olives and preparing a vegevable garden. Already we ha:ve sown dunams of com and wheat nearby. Soon this will be extended to 4,000 dunams at some designated spot'where there is better soil, and easier access to water. Also we plan to develop dairy products and do a little chicken farming. Our Kibbutz has recently received 3 cows and 300 fowl." Kelta owned in addition to its

chickens and cows — three horses and two donkeys for the heavier work, and a couple of dogs that are the beloved mascots of the Kibbutz.
From the bakeshop I wsis taken to the laundry. This was an ugly looking square building with an arched roof made of cormgated tin. A couple of bright-eyed youngsters were diligently scrubbing away on two pairs - of overalls. I was told that they were youth leaders from South Africa being Inducted in the everyday practical side of Kibbutz life. Like in the days of the old American frontier, these pioneer leaders would return after one year's training to South Africa, and lead new immigrants to a territory in the making.'
