Invocation by Rabbi lioldehberg at trade union institute
Earlier this winter. Rabbi Bernard Goldenberg of Congregation Schara Tzedeck was irivited to give the invocation at a trade union institute banquet held here in connection with the developing plans for the merger of the two major labor organizations in Canada.
The labor men were so pleased with the Rabbi's invocation that they published it in a book on the proceedings of the institute and reprinted many copies for distribution. Rabbi Golden-berg's invocation is reprinted here from the union institute book:
Almighty (God—
We who are about ta sit down as brethren, to break bread together want to thank Thee, O God for bringing forth this bread from the earth. May we, at this time, .also remember that you are The One whom all of us are privileged to address as our Father in Heaven Who created us all.
May we, therefore, call upon You now— help us in our efforts to instill in the hearts and minds of all, the ability to live with one another. Guide us in our att^npts to push forward inspiring|y, the frontiers of democracy, economic justice, and freedom for all..
Bestow on us then, the spirit of wisdom and the moral courage to understand that righteousness and good will make a people great, and that discrimination and econonoiic insecurity are gateways to despair. May we realize that freedom is more than a word, democracy more than a phrase, and labour.more than a commodity. Help us realize that these concepts, inspired by You, O God, are safeguards for the dignity and integrity of a human being—any human being.
Within this understanding, give us then the zeal and wisdom to be intelligent and courageous leaders, and help us become the messengers of ah era which will enfold all men in love and cooperation.
^And may this be Thy will. Amen. "
RABBI GOLDENBERG
This Pass@ver finds Israel gravely endangered
By LEO H. MARCUS
PASSOVER — a period in the Jewish calendar of events which calls for a review both of Jewish liberation and the acquisition of Jewish freedom in the days when our forefathers freed themselves of Egyptian bondage, and calls for a resume of our new; found freedom in terms of the emergence of Jewish Statehood.
The Holiday of Passover this year cannot be one of rejoicing for the simple reason that chances for the maintenance of a peaceful existence of the State of Israel are on the wane. Never since the
days of 1047 and 1948 has the situation in Israel been so critical. On all fronts and in all countries there are those who wish to ,bereave us of our Jewish in-LEO MARCUS dependence. On
the borders of Israel there stand enemies who at a moment's :-no-tice would be jprepared to annihilate our Jewish brethren in Israel and decimate the toils of generations. In other lands there are those who wish to truncate our tiny .niche on the face of the map and still others who wish to attack us indircetly by supplying the enemies of Israel with the weapons of war.
The 33rd National Convention of the Zionist Organization of Canada has just concluded its talks in Ottawa and has sounded the alarm to Jews throughout the length and breadth of this land. Recent events have indicated to us in very clear terms that the State of Israel is far from being internationally guaranteed and has shown us that the Jews of Canada must rally^ to the aid of Israel and support her on all fronts.
Vv'e,- as Canadian citizensj must make our voices heard in the councils of Canadian government and tell our respective represent-
