Israel belongs is the Middle East iamilF
T'HE comparison of Jewish nationalism, as manifested in political Zionism, with Arab nationalism, was one of the points covered by Nahum Goldmann last Saturday night in his address before the plenary session of Canadian Jewish Congress in Montreal.
After reading a report of Dr. Goldmann's thesis on Jewish versus Arab nationalism in a recent issue of John Kimche's Jewish Observer and Middle East Review of London, it would appear that an important point was not clearly apparent from the address of the World Zionist president at the Congress convention.
In E)r. Goldman's address earlier this month before the Foreign Press Association (JO and MER,, October 5) Israel's potential role in the development of a policy of co-existence in the Middle East was emphasized.
According to this report the Middle East situation was "exacerbated by the fact that Arab nationalism sought to play off East against West in order to obtain advantages from both. This policy would become more extensive and more megalomaniac unless some agreement for co-existence in the area was propounded."
In his address to Congress Dr. Goldmann stated that we should not be hasty in comparing Egyptian President Nasser to Hitler in spite of his Suez seizure. In London he had suggested that the Suez could perhaps be a test case for the development of a generally constructive policy towards the Middle East which the big powers have so far failed to do.
Dr. Goldnlann pointed out in London that the development of any new and positive policy for the Middle East would require concessions both by Israel and the Arab states.
Again quoting the "Obseryer-Review":
'If Israel continued to be compelled by Arab intransigeance to exist as -a beleagured fortress it would remain a source of friction, but if it were enabled to become an equal partner in the area it would be in a position to make available its tremendous constructive resources for the whole Middle East.
. . any solution to the troublesome problem of Arab-Israel relations without which ther^e could not be Middle East stability would require from the Arabs the acceptance of the fact that Israel mu^t be an equal partner. But it would also require from Israel the recognition that it belonged in the family of nations in the Middle East and an acceptance! of the fact that the Arabs had a great numerical superiority."
All this serves to emphasize what Dr. Goldmann did say in Montreal, that the achievement of Israel's security depends on the solution of* the political problems of the Middle East more than anything else.
Israel needs the continued material support of all the free Jiewish comnaiinities throughout the world in order that economic development can be carried on at a rapid pace without sacrificing any-, thing to the needs of the political hour.
At the same time Tsraelis, and Jews everywhere, have to recognize the need for developing a new attitude towards the Arabs, with Dr. Goldmann's long-term objectives in mind. This could be translated into political support. This aspiect of Israel's overall situation will continue to grow in importance and the sooner it is placed on the agenda for practical consideration, the closer will Israel's problems come to a solution.
