The new U.S. policy $eems to envisage considerable financial aid to the countries of the Middle Eas^^ahd to seek the activation of the Sixth Fleet on presidential orders in time of need. The general feeling in Israel in tbe absence of. details seems to be sdmething of this order: The conviction that America has decided to raise living standai:ds in the region by its promisedl^ financial assistance, that it has decided on an active interest in the region, that it seeks to lend the weight of its authority and prestige to bring peace td th^ area.

Israel, in the fear that any pth^r course will endanger Arab friendship?
It is 4he serious hope of every Israeli that America tvill, in its new Eisenhower, doctrine, be guided by principle rather than 'by expediency, by justice and fair play rather than what may appear on the surface to be immediate self interest. This is, of course, of vital inmiediate importance to Israel. It may be of less immediate, but surely no less vital importance also to the U.S.A.
Recent history with, the other Western Powers certainly reveals that kowtowing to Arab pressure can never be; in the interests of the U.S.A. Arab friendship is a mirage. It has to be bought. And certainly it has to be bought over and over again at the extortionist price of militarist blackmail. It would be well for Washington to remember that the Arab desert is full of mirages.

RUMANIA CHIEF RABBI STANDS FOR ELECTION
LONDON (WJA)—Dr. Moses i Rosen, Chief Rabbi of Rumania, is one of the candidates for the elections to the Grand National Assembly of Rumania on February 3, reports the World Jewish Congress Information Department. Dr. Rosen is said to have d^lared, among other things:— "I consider my standing for elections to the Grand National Assembly an honour to the Jewish population of Rumania. If in the past there were also some Jewish deputies in the parlianipnt, they were there along with exponents of oppression, both of the Rumanian people and of .the national minorities, the supporters and organizers of the pogroms of sad memory. If these Jews ever dared to raise their voices to unmask the policy of national religious discrimination, "this voice was not heard. In contrast with the past, in the Grand National Assembly of the Rumanian People's Republic there are standing for election representatives of the broad popular masses, peasants, workers, intellectuals, who represent the best of the Rumanian people and the national minorities ^ of Rumania. There I wiU only find friends determined to work for the development of this country, the welfare of all her sons, irrespective of nationality or religious denomination. My candidature ,as well as that of the representatives of other religious denominations, confirms once more the full religious liberty enjoyed by all the religions in Rumania."
This dance will hoiior the outgoing executive.
