WHAT'S IN A NAME ?
In. recent weeks.. I have of ten deplored the fact that the name of our-organization has had the tendency to give people erroneous conceptions about it. I thought it would be useful to try, through the medium of the Bulletin, to clarify the kinds of questions that has been emerg-[; ing in part because of our name.
Jewish Community Centres [.and Y.M.-Y.W.H.A.'s are inter-changea.ble terms on the North I American continent. The terms mean a membership organization with a distinct Jewish pro-If gramme orientation, employing
staff skilled In the fields of Social Group Work, PhyMcal^iJgNs^ cation, Nursery Education, Adult Education.
Vancouver has a unique Municipal Community Centre programme. On many occasions, I have felt that people have as-cumed that the programme of the Jewish Community Centre would be similar in scope and purpose to that of any of the Municipal Centres. In this context, the fee structure of the Jew-See: NEW CENTRE (Continued on Page 4)

t h e delegates the views of the Israel government on major issues which will come up for deliberation some time in ^November.
Major issues affecting Israel at this Assembly, all of which are expected to develop considerable debate, include the Arab refugee issue which i^ centered about the fact that/this year's AssemtJly must d^de on what to do further UMJonnection with relief for^A^b refugiees since U.N. reHef work is scheduled to expire next June 30.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees will make their annual report also at this session. The report is expected again this year to reflect the strong pressures by Arab governments for "repatriation" of the refugees to Israel.
In tiirn these issuieg will be ^^fQllo'virea ^. Jofenson's
^^eport oh his visit this ^mmer to all Middle East capitals. President of the Carnegie Endow-nient f o r International Peace, Dr. Johnson is special envoy of the Palestine Conciliation Commission. For the second year he has b e ie n attempting to find means for easing the refugee problem.
Once again this session a resolution is expected to be introduced by a number of U. N. members requesting that the Arab states and Israel meet in direct, face-to-face talks to negotiate possible peace. Such a resolution was presented last year by 16 members, all Africans and Latin Americans except The Netherlands, whch was the only Europeah co-spoHsor. The draft was defeated in the Assembly >by a vote of 44 against, 34 in favor and 20 abstentions. It is believed there will be more sponsors for such a resolution this year. ,
Not on the Assembly agenda, fbut a possibility ifqt* .debate in the next few weeks/^is^'the fact that Syrian attacks haye secured along the Syrian-Israeli border with increasing frequency during the last three months. Ambassador Michael S. Comay, Israel's permanent representative at the UN, has already conferred on that issue with Acting Secretary-General U Thant.
Mr. Comay will represent Israel during Mrs. Meir's brief return to Israel after the session opening. She will, however, return in November to participate in the debates arising out of the
that the development of the globulin was based on the separation of cancer specific proteins from normal proteins. It was first devised by Dr. Sergio de Carvalho, Dr. H, J. Rand and Rand's Cancer Research Laboratories.
Cautiously estimating the effect of his preparation, Dr. Rand said, "The serum holds great promise against various diseases. Preliminary experiments indicate that it may be beneficial in prolonging the life of cancer patients."
>-Explaining why he had brought the process to Israel, Dr. Rand added that he believed scientists here were particularly well equipped to deal with it. He was specially prompted by an abstract of local developments in the field of anti-cancer immunization delivered at the recent Moscow Cancer Congress.
Elaborating on the production process of the serum. Dr. Rand said that the first stage involved the mixing of ground up human cancer tissue, collected frojn bi-opsi|iB "^6^' au^^ As many
kinds as possible are used to produce a multivalent globulin which will be equally effective against most kinds of known caincer.
This "cocktail',, as he called it, is innoculated into animals (mules and horses) and the serum is made from the gamma globulin extracted from their blood.
