City of Promise n^ds Pioneers help
By CLARA LEFF
Clara Leff is the national president of the Pioneer Women'5 organization whose sister organization in Israel, the Moelzet Hapoaiot, are playing a leading role in the development of such newly established cities as Ashdod. Locally, the Pioneer Women's _ organization are holding their annual Bazaar on Dec. 16, the proceeds of which will be used lo further their important projects in Israel. .
Ashdod is a new city set on sand dunes, where the second southern port is being built. Now five years old, it is one of 24 new development towns settled by a quarter of a million newcomers, who have changed the face of the land. New patterns of education had to be evolved to integrate these people of many tongues and varied cultures :— a colossal pioneering task.
Moetzet Hapoaiot sought out the mothers and children in order to prepare them for their new life. At first our haverot organized small groups of friends or an entire household, and found volunteer teachers who taught the illiterate to read and write.
Mayor Hyim, wno hales from Kgypt, told us how Moetzet Hapoaiot was influential in tb.e rapid development of the town. It was the first organization to come forward and organize the center, which effected- a measure of social cohesion among the diverse elements. They taught the women Hebrew, cooking, vocations, thus hielping to niold Ashdod into an Israeli town. By opening the first kindergarten before the existence of the local council, they constituted the first authority of any kind.
It was a frontier town in every respect — work for the men was limited to three days a week, and none at all for the women. Without coastal roads; cpminunicatioris were cut off in the winter. MH came to their rescue,'the Mayor continued, actually saving lives by getting mothers to the hospital for the delivery of their babies. A doctor was brought on a tractor when the first child was born.
When the Rogosjn Nylon Factory was established, women got 18% of the jobs. One of those trained by MH won a prize and the coveted promotion to manager. Many women are the family breadwinners in Ashdod.; With the diamond, wool and textile factories working in three shifts, many more could get jobs, but THEY NEEB MORE NURSERIES, MORE KINDERGARTENS because those we have built are filled to capacity. Growing by leaps and bounds, Ashdod is a city of great promise, a port to be completed in 1964.
Pioneer Women — Moetzet Hapoaiot have paved the way in the Absorption and integration of an important new community. We iirust not fail the women, whose co-operation with our haverot has led to meaningful progress. The big day nursery of their dreams must go up, and the funds will be "used wisely and well," Maydr Hyim assured us.
The PW — MH story in Israel is absorbing, fascinating, for our haverot on the spot are always exploring and discovering pioneering tasks that await our response.
