YOUTH ALIYAH AUDIENCE CHEERS MARCUS' SPEECH
In years past, speakers have come to address the Youth Al iyah Luncheon from many different parts of the globe. After listening to the 1966 speaker, Vancouver's own Leo Marcus countless women were asking— "These foreigners, who needs them? We have an orator right at home."
Describing his recent trip to Europe and Israel, Mr. Marcus visibly moved his iaudierice as he recounted many beautifully tolc tales of courage and pathos. He pointed out that we all are shareholders in Israel, to be blamed for its failure and praised for its successes.
The story of many immigrants to Israel was told: a women from Auschwitz,^who has found a final home in Israel, after agonizing difficulties in escaping; of a boy, victim of polio, , whose very crutches were taken away before he could leave the land of his birth for final sanctuary in Israel; of a family of nine, for whom Israel meant peace for the grandparents, work for the parents, education for the children.
Speaking directly to those who had decided that Youth Aliyah no longer needed their money, Mr. Marcus challenged: "If you feel thi^ way, give up your next holiday in Honolulu, and visit the still-existing ghettos of central Europe—you may, change your mind."
Closing with the stirring words of youth martyr, Hannah Sen-esch, "Blessed is the match which is consumed and kindles the flame". Mr. Marcus received a rousing and deserved standing ovation.
The luncheon, attended by more than 300 women, was convened by Mrs. Emil Wener, who
was able to announce a record total to date of over $13,000.
Mrs. Harry Shechter, president of Vancouver Hadassah-Wizo, delighted the audience by announcing a gift of seeds from Israel, sent by Mrs. Myer Wine. These were distributed to all present and will no doubt soon be sprouting in many Vancouver homes.
Greetings from the Zionist organization of Canada were ;brought by vice-president Dr; Ben Goodman, who remarked that he himself owed a special debt to Youth Aliyah because his wife had been a Youth Aliyah child.
The invocation was delivered by Mrs. Harry Ferman. Results to date of the Youth Aliyah Men's drive were announced by 1966 Chairman, Mrs. Harry Lowe.
Door-prize winners were: Hart-nell perfume, Mrs. Hollander; Faberge beauty set, Mrs. Milner (Edmonton); hat (certificate, Camille Hat shop, Mrs. J. Miller; Fieldcrest towels, Mrs. Bernice Sweid; oil painting by Kit Thorne, Mrs. S. Gold; week at Bermuda Inn, Mrs. D. Herstein
