THE TORONTO TELEGRAM
IF WAR BREAKS OUT again between Israel and the Arab nations, whose side will we be on?
That may sound like a ridiculous question, but is it? From the tone of the debate in the Security Council and the play that is being given here to the condemnation by the major powers of Israel's retaliatory attack on the Beirut airport, it is by no means certain that the weight of opinion, let alone sympathy, would be with Israel if hostilities were resumed.
The Jews of the world may be forgiven if they sense a new mood of anti-Semitism arising among the nations, led by the Soviet Union, and a consequent isolation and even abandonment of Israel. The hate euphemism, "Zionist" is creeping back into the news reports; Israel is pictured not as a tiny democratic island in a sea of Arab autocracy, poverty and intrigue, but as an intransigent power bent on aggrandizement by militaiy means.
ISRAELI MINISTER of Religion Zerah Warhaftig. raised a significant if familiar point when he asked how Pope Paul was able to express sympathy to Beirut over Israel's attack on its airport when he had been silent on the earlier Arab terrorist attacks against Israel.
Winston Churchill, who apparently has something of his grandfather's gift for clearheaded analysis, asks why the world is so upset over the destruction of property—some $25 million worth of Beirut aircraft—-when it can accept the loss of life suffered by Israel in repeated Arab guerrilla sorties. The answer, it seems obvious, can be determined by asking anotheir question, whose planes, whose lives? V . .
The justice of Israel's position vis a vis her Arab enemies has been argued before the UN by Foreign Minister Abba Ebah with eloquence and logic so often that he must scarcely have the heart to try again, If the world won't believe, it is because it doesn't want to believe.
If Israel is being set up for some kind of genteel betrayal by the West, the reason can be found in our new insistence on a policy of accommodation at any price to the demands of the USSR. Look how easily we adapted to the utter rape of Czechoslovakia this summer. That unconscionable act of aggression has been rationalized as only an "adjustment" within the Communist empire,
WILL WE SHOW any more fortitude or insight in resisting the Soviet's determination to harass Israel by arming and encouraging the Arab adventurers? After all, Israel's besetting sin is the same as the Dubcek regime's, namely a foolish and stubborn determination to be democratic. Israel is hated by the Soviets externally for the same reason that Jews are persecuted inside Russia, because both nation and people believe in freedom. That is the supreme heresy.
But is the West really purged of its virulent anti-Semitism? Who protested, what meetings were held, what boycott;^ demanded when Pl'esident de Gaulle hot long ago uttered the most violent words against the Jews that have been heard from a responsible statesman since the time of Hitler?
As the world learned 30 years ago, not the Pope, not the French, not the Poles and not Joseph Stalin or his heirs are proper guides on the subject of the Jews or "Zionism".

Rescue faces new challenges
By JOSEPH L. KLARMAN
Head of Jewish Agency YiHith Aliyah Department
IN ITS ESSENCE YOUTH AUTAH is first and foremost a rescue movement. Since its establishment, some 35 years ago, Youth Aliyah's leaders and workers have believed that prior to their educational and rehabilitative work, it is rescue of Jewish children, rescue from danger of physical annihilation and spiritual assimilation, which is the ul-
timate goal of their movement.
Recha Freier, founder of the movement, acted in Nazi Germany of the early thirties. Her successors, the late Henrietta Szold and Hans Bayth, had to meet the historical challenge of rescuing Jewish children after the holocaust of the Second World War—the direct aftermath of Nazism. When the State of Israel was established and Jewish children were facing a new physical danger to their very lives, from those countries which did
not (and still do not) recognize the right of the Jewish people to renew their autonomous national state. Youth Aliyah had to continue its rescue work,
MOEE THAN 20,000 children were rescued in the years from the establishment, of Youth Aliyah until the emergence of the State of Israel. Another 100,-000 have been rescued, rehabilitated and educated since then. It is almost incredible, but never-(Continued on Page 11) See YOUTH ALIYAH

Open letter to U.S. Piresident-elett
Dear Mr. Nixon,
Penzoil Scranton's chamelian statements after his brief 10 day visit to the Mid East are understandable. He is merely reviving and following the same defunct policy he and Dulles imposed on Israel in 1956, when you were Vice-President.
By "even handed dealing" did he mean that you would respect and keep your promises, and at least match the tremendous amoimt of arms that Russia is ^sendiiig' the: Ai^dfes? Or did^ -he mean th&t bur American sei^ui^, woiiid againn be' jeopidrdizrid r in' the Middle East by selling out our proven friend to.those who demand 'baksheesh' and Israel's &calp if we want to wean them away from Russian Communism?
"Even-dealing" does not mean double-dealing; "even - handed" does not mean under-handed.
It was unnecessary for Mr. Scranton to travel to the Middle East to bring himself Up to date on the Mid East facts of life. He could have examined the 'Record' in any library, or interviewed their representatives in Washington or at the U.N. in New York at greater length, leisure and convenience. But he was again imitating the method used by the British. Whenever they intended to sell Israel down the river with "White Papers" and "partition plans", they alwajrs preceded announcement of their nefarious schemes by sending an "investigating committee" to the Mddle East. They sent over 18 of them that did eversrthing but investigate.
By what right, or under what authority does any outside power seek to control or dictate Israel's destiny? Only those coimtries directly affected, only those whose peoples must live under the terms and conditions directly agreed
upon, have the right and duty to say what those terms and conditions should be. Neither Russia nor America have the right to dictate or Impose terms and conditions that they consider fair, that they consider as £heir price for their peace in th Middle East.
Just because you know that Israel will never turn to Russia as the Arabs have done, is no reason for pushing her to "The Wall" to see how long Israel can remain our ally while we help her enemies to destroy her economic viability, and her liveatile safety and security.
Since you recognized before •your election, that American interests in the Mid East depeiiided upon a strong Israel, I .trust you will,it^jeifit Mr. 'Scrantbh's stig-^tioiis/^Thes^ are riii^
