A Channka tale
WHY JEWS SPIN THE DREIDL
AN OLD LEGEND tells how the Chanuka dreidl was invented during the days of the Maccabees.
The Syrian tyrant king Antio-chus would not allow our ancestors to study the Tprah or to gather in a synagogue. But the Jews would not forsake the Torah. So they met secretly in small groups and in hidden places and studied the ^ Torah by heart. In that way if one forgot a passage, another who remembered could teach it to him while a third person served as warning lookout at the door.
One of the tricks that was used to avoid discovery was the Dreidl game. This is how is was dbne.
The students always kept a top (spinner) on the table while they were studying. If a soldier appeared before the group could get away, one of them would begin to spin the Dreidl and all would gayly pretend that they were only playing an innocent game. The soldier had no way of proving otherwise.
And so a little Chanuka Dreidl saved the lives of many loyal Jews.
