Deaf Israel youth aided by Histadrut
The annual Histadrut Campaign, now underway through March 15, is making satisfactory progress but still requires complete community support, Drive Chairman Harry Avery told The Bulletin this weeh.
Mr. Avery;is commending the over -all efforts of canvassers, noted the. work of Jack Rootman, who is in charge of the canvassing of all North Shore Jewish residents..Additionally Mr. Avery paid tribute to veteran canvasser and loi^-time active Histadrut supporter, Satil Kahan.
Mr. Kahan &ind Mr. Rootman gave the following resume of one of Histadrut's main projects, to which drive funds will be allocated.
"This year, 7,400 students are attending 296 classes in the 22 Israel vocational high schools of Amal, a thousand more than attended the 20 schools of Amal last year. The figures do not include thousands of working youth attending the apprenticeship schools in about a dozen additional schools, also under Histadrut auspices.
"Ail told, some 60,000 youths are enrolled in Israel's vocational hi^ schools.
"Recently, the Amal system was enlarged by the affiliation of three comprehensive vocational high schools maintained by regional bodies.
"The Niv School for Deaf Children in Tel Aviv, is a regional school which accepts deaf children from a district covering about 20 towns around Tel Aviv. There are 15 classes in the school, from first to,eighth grade, with two special classes consisting of children who have , additional handicaps.
"Their program includes speech therapy, auditory training, Hebrew, Bible, history, geography, nature studies, arithmetic, etc. They also participate in sports.
"In the field of music, the children wear hearing-aids and are taught to feel the vibrations of the instrument sounds. The pupils

form a band and function well.
"When the children were first exposed to a new Israeli-made hearing aid, it was an emotional moment. The children's eyes glistened with anticipation. . . which soon turned to great joy when the teacher's voice was heard over the apparatus.

S.T. READIES ADULT EDUCATION INSTITUTE
JOEL S. CUTLER
Schara Tzedeck School of [Jewish Education will hold an lAdult Education Institute for all (parents in the community it was announced by Joel S. Cutler, prin-Icipal and youth director.
The Institute, starting Wed-Inesday, March 7 and concluding Wednesday, April 11, will be held
from 8 to 10 p.m. in the school building.
Mr. Cutler explained that the Adult Institute will include Purim and Passover workshops, elementary Hebrew reading, lectures on Jewish life in the Middle Ages and on tlie role of Jewish Women in Halacha (Jewish Law).
The courses will be taught by Rabbi Marvin Hier, Aaron Breit-bart and Mr. Cutler. A nominal fee will cover the cost of all educational materials.

JOHANNESBURG—Dr. Marcus Arkin, professor of economics and head of the economics and economic history department at Rhodes university, Grahamstown, has been appointed to succeed Lionel Hodes, the general secretary, as the senior official of the South African Zionist Federation.
Dr Arkin will take office as director-general on July 1.

JNF Cites Levey
The Jewish National Fund of Canada recently honored its past Vancouver region president Leo Levey on his 70th birthday. Th^eertitieat^ presented in the presence of JNF Council members, cited Mr. Levey's "many years of dedicated service to the cause of Zion and especially towards the upbuilding of the homeland through the, JNF. We wish him length of years to continue his noble endeavors."

A general meeting of Lion's Gate lodge B'nai B'rith will be held this Monday, March 5, 8:30 p.m., in the Centre. Election of the slating committee will take place and program chairman Fred Gottfi'ied P.P. promises a 'most interesting program'.
A 'fun' evening of 10-pin bowling, followed by a social hour, will be held Saturday, March .17 at the Blue Boy, S.E. Marine Drive and Eraser St. Prizes will be awarded. All members and their guests are being invited.
