Saul Berson quartet launclies Peretz concert series.
The Saul Berson Quartet
The Peretz Centre for Secular Jewish Culture is launching a new concert series, Music at the Peretz Centre, with the Saul Berson Quartet on Dec. 6 at 8 p.m. The group is comprised of Saul Berson (saxophones), Tony Wilson (guitars), Kim Darwin (accordion) and Paul Blaney (bass).
Well-known among Vancouver jazz lovers, the quartet creates a diverse mix of music incorporating Middle Eastern overtones with a pinch of Piazzolla thrown in for good measure. This concert will feature a wide range of music from tango to bebop. Two new compositions will premiere at the concert, in addition to selections from the group's CDs.
Future concerts in this series are: the Pacific Clarinet Trio, Feb. 15, featuring the world premiere of a Trio Concertante by Antonin Reidia and a beautiful and emotional trio by Jewish composer Alexander Zemlinsky; 01am on April 17, performing their klezmer-influ-enced world-beat music that draws on the rich traditions of eastern Europe and the Middle East and combines them with modem fimk, jazz and Latin beats; and the West Coast Symphony, May 28, including performances by the winners of the Vancouver Community College concerto competition and hi^Jighting the Rustic Wedding Symphony by Jevrish composer Karl Goldmark.

little to criticize in this show. The sets and costumes by Alison Green are terrific. The "movies" within the play manage to capture the pace and feel of the old silents, even if they look a lot more like digital video than flickering celluloid. The book is a bit dated and corny, but the talented cast still manages to wring lau^ from the old gags. Even in Vancouver, a little
Rain can really brighten your day.
