/ More than 300 people crowded into Arts dlub Theatre on Granville \ Island recently for "An evening of Jewish tnusic" arranged as part of an ongoing series of events to mark the 18th year of Temple Sholom.
Particularly fine performances during the evening event were rendered by Soviet-born cellist Yevgeny Osadchy and pianist Melinda Coffey who offered a moving selection of popular Jewish songs as part of their program. The rich operatic voice of Temple Sholom choir director and cantorial soloist Murray Kenig at the close of the concert worked magic on the music of the synagogue, of Israel and of the shtetl, generating a strong positive response from the audience.
Enjoyable as well were original compositions by Joan Beckow, performed by the composer herself and accompanied by Beverly Holender and Wendy Stuart. Trombonist Gordon Cherry and pianist Joyce Cherry delighted the audience with rarely performed works by Ferdinand David and Leonard Bernstein.
Narrator for the concert was Temple Sholom president Dr. Gershon H. Growe. The Talmud Torah Choir, under the direction of Rabbi Maurice Myerowitz, opened the evening ^yith the singing of *0 Canada' and *Hatikvah\
Responsible for the success of the evening were Tobin Robbins, "Chai" celebration committee chairman, Wendy Stuart, musical program coordination and Cathy Netter Bregman, graphic design . and publicity chairman.
Irving Berlin never had formal musical training and had to use a special piano when he composed because he couldn't read music and never learned to play the instrumetnt properly.
