appointed to the UBC faculty. He became a professor in 1949 and head of civil engineering in 1970, a position he held until his retirement in 1978.
As an academic Samuel Lipson was a distinguished research scientist and a prolific author. Yet he was as successful in the practice of his profession as he was in the classroom.
In 1967 he won the Canada Centennial Medal and in 1978 he won the Professional Service Award of the Association of Professional Engineers of B.C. As well, he was a member and leader of numerous engineering associations and worked as an expert consultant well after "retirement" to the very end of his life.
Mr. Lipson enjoyed a full set of hobbies including golf, bridge, music, photography and constructing harpsichords. However, these amusements had to find time when he wasn't occupied either working or supporting the Jewish community.
He was dedicated to Jewry here and in Israel. A long-time member of Beth Israel Congregation, he served as chairman of its board of education. He also headed the United Jewish Appeal's permanent board and was chairman of theUJA.
In 1957 he was vice-president of the then Zionist Organization. Later he served as president of Canadian Jewish Congress, Pacific region. Mr. Lipson also held posts with the Jewish Community Fund and c ouncil and Jewish Community Centre.
