The story of Dolores Claman, as the composer is kno>yn, is not a recent one. Actually ii^ that stretcfaes arp the wbricHa story which features a musical pioneer who today has very little opportunity to share her craft with newcomers to the field or to practise the art form that niade her famous many years go.

where her parents still live. But Dolores spent her years, all over the world: USC, Juil-liard, Spain, England and New York have all been home for a while. Claman "never moved back until well after I was married." ; ' ' Shb ' it^ef^ musical career with the clear aim of becoming a concert pianist. But when she realized that she would not become a first rate pianist, she switched to composing and working with other people: singers, dancers and choreographers.
Claman found herself in London when independent televisipn was just starting there and soon enough began writing various T.V. themes. In New York, the composer wrote music for theatre revues off-Broadway; enjoying it immensely.
Eventually Claman and her husband found themselves back in Canada and within a short while '^turned into the largest jingle house Canada ever had." They worked in Toronto and soon enough opened an additional office in M&ntreal.
It was a team work:" I wrote the music and my husband wrote the words. He is very clever with that sort of thing."
Excelling in jingles looked quite strange at times, Claman recalls. "You never think that
Fund makes bookis) on Jewish culture
NEW YORK — More than 3,000 publications, covering every phase of Jewish scholarship and culture, have been published with the financial support of the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture since its formation in 1965, it was reported.
Founded "with reparations funds from West Germany, the foundation has supported the publication of more than 1,700 scholarly books in 19 languages by 132 colleges, universities and Jewish communal institutions.
wrote music for several films, but those were so bad she wants to forget about them completely.
From jingles for all the car companies and all the airlines ("even Air France"), which generated about 35 awards for advertising music ("We never did Coke or Pepsi but that's about it **), Claman got to write the opening theme for
Claman's professional life she is wise enough to keep them to herself. But still one senses that there is a sort of disappointment that all her work "was done to order." And today she still confesses that she "wouldn't mind doing some film. I have a talent for melody and for interesting chord changes, for a strong theme. I know what 1 do."
The antique shop started with Richard Morris, Dolores' husband. "When we were in Spain he got bored playing tennis." And being always a porcelain specialist, it was almost natural to pursue the interest here in Vancouver.
Richard, of a Sephardic family from Portugal, and Dolores, whose father was Jewish, are immersed with their antiques these days. And their children continue in their parents' footsteps. Michael is involved in the shop and Madeleine is a singer who did a lot of underground music in Vancouver.
When 1 called Dolores Claman she tried to avoid this interview, suggesting that there is nothing really to talk about. After spending an hour with this fascinating woman in her antique shop, I discovered a mos't remarkable world and a piece of music history of which not many people are aware.

Introducing the new 300E and the next generation of the Mercedes-Benz 300 Class.
The Mercedes-Benz 300 Class enters' 1990 with its engineering supremacy intact. With its perfor'

But the elegance of the 300 Class is dramatically enhanced.
The purest form ever given to a high-performance sedan has been honed to even purer form. Made brighter. Sleeki Smoother. For 1990. two 100 sedans shaa* that form: the flagship 300h. and the 300h 2.6 — Its twin in virtually everything except price.

in summing up the Mercedez-Benz 300 Class for 1990. it can be predicted^that cars already famed for their engi-'neering leadership now promise to be equally famed for their elegance.
