the two is the difference between spirituikl life and death. If the baking process exceeds eighteen minutes even by so much as an l/1800th of a second, we have forbidden JSfaiife/z, possesion of which during Pesach is punishable by beingcut off from life.
Anything less than eighteen minutes is permitted — no in-between state. Even the spelling of Aame/z and ma/zaA alludes to this miniscule difference; each word has a mem and a/jMiii!^^ and the third letter, the AeMn malzaA and the in Aome/x,;
look almost the same exceptfor the length ofa tiny hair, and the hair which separates ma/zaA from Aome/z, is what separates life fromdeath.
Rabbinic exegesis: In the first chapter of the Torah we read, **And G'd said: Let us make man in our image, rfter our likeness, and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and oviertlie fowl... and over the cattle, and over every creepingthing [Gen, 1:26f
Having dominion is the translation of the word vayirdu, but Rashi points that raj^frilif contains both the language of conquest and of decline {rdu is dominion, yrd is decline). If man is worthy he will have dominion over the animals; unworthy, he will descend lower than theanimal. One word, but the extremes couldn't be further apart.
From Yom Kippur! The ascetic Tequirements of the day immerse us into a state of holiness whichTmnscends time and, space. And yet the Torah selection for Afternoon Prayer (AffiiAa) pronounces the terrible illicit sexual relationships, jolting us from pur reveries./JLev. 7*/.
Why this particular chapter at the very moment when the Jewish people are ascending higher and higher? This, however, is the point. Channeling so much holiness, we are in danger of desecrating this energy. The greater the possibility for the sacred, the greater the possibility for the profane.
For those indoctrinated with notions of original sin, the Eastern concept of G-d being inside us is revlutionary. But Judaism, with a long history of pursuing the ineffable, wants us to understand that perceiving G-d within its crucial but is only one step in a multifaceted process. And it works both Ways: if it*s possible to turn the G-d withinihto beast, it's also possible to turnthe best within into G-d.

Coast Guard maintenance supervisor George Churcher said he was aware of the graffiti, "We had |>lanned to paint that station two weeks ago, but with the bad weather, we have not been able to get anyone out there." he said.
The light station is a common target for grstffiti, and has to be repainted about three times yearly at a cost of S2,00Q each time, said Churcher. Tourists brought Mi€i incident to theattehtionof authorities.
