three years of age through eight years; this yearthe children's classes range from two-year-olds through 13 years of age.
In keeping with our objective of fostering Yiddishkeiu we reintroduced Yiddish language classes into our children's curriculum last year and this year we add beginner's Yiddish for adults.
A highlight last year was the charming production of The World According to BJ. Silverman, staged by the Jewish Young People's Theatre under the direction of Lynda Goldhar-Smith. This year, the JYPT introduces a beginners class for introductory skills alongside the current performance ensemble.
Family Sunday continues to enjoy the support of young families and provides a unique opportunity for creatinga feeling of community, while the monthly "Tower of Eager breakfast and speaker forum, i'ni^ted last year, is becbnuhg increasingly popular.
In response to a call for more ceremony and some ''spiritual** component to our secular community, a monthly Fraytik Tsu Nakht/Erev Shabbes function was initiated last year. For some, this has become the highlight of our experience. The
singing isparticularly popular with the young children.
All this, added to oiir old standby, the Annual Third Seder, the new Purim Cami-valv and the Annual Banquet, makes us feel that our cup, indeed, runneth over.

Self employed to iiiiy

Self-
employed people have ^been betrayed by the Israeli finance minister's failure to keep his vow to lower their social-security payments along with those of other businesses, Pov Lautman, speaking for the Conference of Israeli Economic Organizations, charged. A treasury spokesman said it would have' been absurd to offer such reductions to the -self-employed: "The idea is to create jobs."

A Vancouver tax receipt issued in 1889 to WiUiaih Sei-delman; a delicate black dress, part of Helen Ehrlich's trousseau in Vienna almost 80 years ago; three exquisite beaded purses of the 1920s, once belonging to Rose Sos-kin, the camera used by noted British Columbia photographer Leonard Frank — all share equal honors in the exhibit v4 Thread in the Coat —120 Years of Jewish Life in B.C.
Organized by the Jewish Festival of the Arts Society in cooperation with the Jewish Historical Society of B.C. and the Yukon, and the Jewish Community Centre, the exhi-

A ceremonial B'nai B'rith presidential vest worn by Karasov in 1908, the JCC weekly news of March 20, 1920, and many other mementos, as well as numerous photos from Jewish communal, service, social, religious and cultural life all convey a pic^ ture of a community very much part of B.C. and at one with its Jewish roots.

The variety of the articles assembled for the exhibit suggests the question "What is Jewish about this item?" Jews emigrated to B.C. from every continent on the globe, bringing with them precious belongings ... sometimes of a ritual nature, like the Pel-man family's megillah from Russia, or Ann Herstein's grandfather Rabbi Marcus Bemer's glass Elijah cup from England... sometimes of practical or nostalgic value, like Lenore Etkin's com muffin form* made by her father in the U.S.V or Fran Panar's ISO-year-oId silver spoons from Russia. These articles are part of the Canadian Jewish emigration experience.
When they settled in Canada, the immigrants adapted to Canadian life quickly, earning their living in many ways, integrating into the social fabric of their new country while still maintaining their Jewish identity. The exhibit reflects this adaptation.
In one showcase, one may view items from Max Dodeck's fur business .. Mr. Maurice Fox's medical texts ... a 100-year-old abacus used by Dr. Ralph Yorsh's father, who was his bookkeeper ... Hebrew blc^cks from Max Gurevitch's printing business... an old pill-making machine from Knowl-ton Drugs. In another showcase, a sports medal won by jeanette Nbvikoff dtthe Harris Playground in 1917^ Rae Seidelman Morris^ Britanhia High School sports patch and Jacob Biely's 1926 UBC Tot€im Yearbook testify to the active participation of B.C. JeWs in the education and sports scene.
How active that participation was in Canadian life may be seen ifrom a letter dated Nov. 21,1917 fromthe Minister's Office in Ottawa to Esther Seidelman. It expresses sympathy at the death of her son Edward, whose sacrifice in the First World War "has rendered the highest services of a worthy citizen." '
The many mementos from Jewish organizations illustrated the strong ties B.C. Jews continued to maintain to their Jewish heritage. Invol-
