Shlock Rock, a New York-based Jewish rock band, will make its sole Vancouver appearance at a post-Purim concert on Sunday, March 1.
The bash, which starts at 7:30 p.m. in the new aiudito-rium of Vancouver Talmud Torah, is sponsored by the schoors student council.
Inspired and created by Lenny Solomon, a SO^year-old New Ybrker, Shlock Rock inserts its own words and niessage into well-known rock hits.
Solomon begaii writing
"shlock songs-* in 1982 as a member of Kesher, ai band playing "Chassidic rock]' 7-' songs using ^Biblical Verses and phrases from prayer services set to rock music.
The group has appeared; in virtually . every major North American city» as well as South Africa and Australia.
The six-man band cbni-prises three part-timers (a
lawyer, a doctor and a dentist), two part-time Shlock Rock musicians and Solomon, himself a full-time Shlock Rocker..
Recent albums have each had their own theme. Magical History Tour, released in 1991, focuses firmly on Jewish history.
The album includes the lead song, "We've, Got a Strong Desire" (based on BillyJoel's "We Didn't Start the Fire"),which summarizes Jewish history; Roy son's "Prefi, changed to tell of four fam-oiis Biblical women; and the Beatles' *^Back in the USSR'' is renamed ''Leaving the USSR."
But Magical History Tour is not all serious, since the Rolling Stpnes' "ICan't Get No Satisfaction" becomes the Furim-tinged "I Can't Get No Haniantashen."
For niore information, call student council advisor Elazar Reshef or Rabbi Harry Mauer at Vancouver Talmud Torah, 736-7307.
