The fifth annual Canadian Zionist Federation public speaking contest for elementary School students attracted 45 participants.
The speakers were cheered on by about 250 faniily members and friends who attended the March 4 contest held at the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Van--couver.
Erin Hochstein of Bur-quest pladed first in the Grade five category for her speech on the topic "How would you solve the problems of anti-SemitiSm arid racism?"
She received the Morris Black Memorial Trophy, presented by Larry Barzelai.
Laura Barzelai and Kyra Folk-Farber, both of Talmud Torah, placed second and third respectively.
In the Grade 6 level.

"A Vision of Peace" was the theme for Hillel Hoiise*S Israel Week at the University of British Columbia.
The week attempts to foCus-T-the university corii-munity on Israel and give a clearer picture of the Middle East situation^ according to the student group.
Israel Week cpordintors Suzanne Markoe and Vanessa Lurie transformed Hillel House into a vignette of Israel, complete with a bird's-eye view of Ma§ada and the Wailing Wall.
Events, which took place Feb. 22-28. dealt with the political situatiori in the Middle East. The social, cultural and educational side of Israel were also presented.

Feb. 24 Torah discussion on the meaning of Zionism from a religious Context. They addressed the question of whether Israel ought tphe a secular ofreligious state.
There was also* philosophical debate on the definition of Israel asithe Jewish homeland.
The week's highlight, was keynote speaker Harry Kriey-Tal, Israeli consul-general in San Francisco. JCney-Tal spoke Feb. 25 about Israel's position at the Washington peace talks and . the state's vision of the Middle East in thefuture.

Students also had the opportunity to peruse displays on higher education in Israel, as well as shop at Hil-lel's shuk featuring goods from Yerushalem Imports.

Simon Eraser University held its Israel Day on Feb. 24. Students had three display tables on Israel, including personal photo albums. Kney-Tal gave a talk during the lunch hour.
Hillel House director Zac Kaye noted that the week was "the result of countless hours of student work in terms of planning, artwork, writing and research.
"The Jewish community of Vancouver can be proud of their dedication to Israel and all they have done to promote our homeland on campus. We're looking for-wafd already to Israel Week
